Quite disturbingly KJT pointed out that the club I bought from a professional may have been bough elsewhere at a, how shall we say, massively reduced rate and sold to me for what I believed to be about normal based on market prices.
Now this has raised two internal questions for me, the first being the very authenticity of the item, if its true and the same club then "too good to be true" springs to mind.
The second question is on morals and integrity, there is no illegality in selling like that amd many on here have today said that pro's are not sales people but is there a line that shouldnt be crossed on the pusuit of profit.
I spent a fair whack on that and my PP thought I was nuts, seems he was right and if I had liked the club and put it in the bag then I
would be none the wiser.
The serial numbers are a match to the number.

Of course I will be taking this up when I am next at the club and it some ways re-enforces some mutterings I have heard about other thinhs going on (which are unfounded so can't really be used but still get you thinking).

I suppose my question is, how much should we be able to put our trust in pros for anything outsise of teaching?

Should be able to trust your pro 100% when selling you equipment

But I'm not sure what has happened with your pro ?

you never know Greig.

My next door neighbor had a 2 ball odssey putter and one of the round bits fell out so he took it to a local pro for repair.

a couple of weeks later he got a call to say it could not be repaired as it was fake.

Then asked where did he get it..... you he replied.

So you think you have paid over the odds for something and you are blaming your pro??

Did you not do your homework on price, shop around etc?

I'm not sure what your point is tbh!

Did you not read it. I thought the price was ok BASED ON MARKET VALUES...
These things retail at £149 stock he sold me it for more with an upgraded shaft and now looks as though it was bought for peanuts hence the authenticity qiestion.
Its OK though pros and club biilders union and all that.

Certainly not that! You could ask the Pro I work with how much I moan to him about the way some Pro's go about their business.

The thing is though - authenticity aside - he's sold you soemthing at what you say is 'market rate' - what he happened to get it for is kind of irrelevant, if you are a) happy to have paid that price and b) its authentic. He's allowed to make a profit.

However, if you believe it is not authentic, then thats a different matter because I would have though any pro could spot a fake with even a little bit of effort.

Edit: Pro's get plenty of 'own use' items, that they then sell on and pocket the cash. Its just commerce not extortion!

Trust my pro 100%. That said, when buying a new set of clubs (irons, wedges, woods, driver, all with custom shafts) I looked at prices around and gave them to him "just out of interest" to show what I could get them for if I went elsewhere. He gave me a competitive price if not the absolute cheapest........ but I'd still buy from him as I want to support my club and its pro shop.

if he was utterly taking the mick I can understand you being miffed though - it's a 2 way street in my opinion.

Not much then Bob. Yeah, I am getting that feeling. Support your pro and all that.

If you are handing money over to anyone, you will hopefully do your homework first. Then based on the persons reputation/ word of mouth/past dealings etc you make the decision.

As in all walks of life, there are good guys and some not so good guys. It's down to the guy with the money to work out if they are dealing with the former or the latter.
I mean, for goodnes sake, people buy cars from Smiffy

I'd be a bit annoyed if I'd bought that off my pro.

I get the point that you were happy with the price paid, should have researched etc but it was an impulse buy so that's not really valid.

It's blatant profiteering and a 300% + mark up is taking the mickey.

He's taken a risk and been caught out.:o

As long as it IS authentic, then nothing wrong with what your Pro did imo. I do, however, know of Pros that apply their normal mark-up on the 'cheap' cost, so everyone gets a 'deal'.

How does KJT know or even suspect it was bought somewhere else? how much are we saying it was picked up by the pro for?

So the pro has found a bargain and managed to sell it at another price ?

Nothing really wrong with it but guess it's a danger when buying second hand
