I’ve got to have a Bi lateral hernia operation. I’ve got the opportunity to go private and a date of November 25th has been pencilled in . I’m a joiner who is self employed but subs to a developer. We always shut down for Xmas so I’m trying to incorporate this 2wk loss of wages in my recuperation. I’m also booked to play golf in Marrakesh on January 16th ( Doc says I should be ok by then 🤞) . The surgeon says it’s 4 wks off work and no heavy lifting for 6wks !! I’m having keyhole surgery. Has anyone had this operation who can give me any hints and tips on recuperation.

Have they said what the op involves and how they’re going to effectively repair the “internal hole” this is what massively impacts the healing process.

I had this exact surgery 22 years ago now, it was done privately but in Germany so I had amazing before and after care they even brought you beer as an accompaniment to your dinner😍. Mine was repaired with what can only be described as a metal fibre gauze mesh, then the stitches were like a heavy duty fishing wire. Recovery time is hard to describe as I couldn’t stand up straight for nearly 10 days as the repair meshed together because you could literally feel it pulling, once the stitches were out it was a little easier but took a few weeks to return to what I’d call normal function. I think if I’m honest I rushed my recovery as I was young and impatient, in hindsight I’d have given myself 6 weeks before doing proper light physical activity.

Work wise just don’t over do it as you will regret it, golf wise that’s a decent gap between surgery and playing but I wouldn’t recommend rushing to hit balls much sooner just to scratch the itch. It’s a tender area and you can feel every pull as you move about during recovery so keep it sensible and don’t do anything to quickly. Even now I still feel the odd pull if I over do things and think I may need it redone In the next few years.

Edit: I should add I was told initially mine would be keyhole surgery, when I woke up I had a 5 inch scar! Something to do with once they’re in there if they find it’s not what they thought then they do what’s best whilst your under the knife 🤣

That could be why my recovery wasn’t as nice as I’d hoped🤔

If it being done by key hole surgery listen to the doctor.

You cannot see all the internal damage and it is very easy to tear the stitches by over exertion.

Watch your diet and avoid and avoid exertion going to the toilet, use softening products such as Laxido to avoid straining.

I had exactly the same surgery just over 12 months ago. Well, almost the same. At 6’5” my surgeon decided my eyes were too far removed from my groin, so I had keyhole surgery 😉

I, too, had gauze mesh stitched over both hernia sites. I was up and about very quickly, but I was careful to adhere to the advice of my surgeon, and as such I lifted very little for the first month, and nothing heavy for six weeks.

In terms of driving, the standard advice is to wait until you can perform an emergency stop without pain or discomfort, although I would imagine driving a manual car could be uncomfortable with the constant use of the clutch. I didn’t drive for a couple of weeks.

And, most importantly, I was back golfing in about six weeks. Best advice I can give is stick to the advice, which is pretty much standard regardless of where you have the procedure. It’s given with good reason, because it is quite easy to undo all the good the surgeon has done by thinking you can exert yourself.

Yes the consultation gave me a full explanation of the procedure. He’s going to be putting mesh in with dissolving stitches.

I had a single one done via keyhole & I was driving & hitting wedges within 3 weeks. The worst part of the whole thing was the severe wind it gave me. They pump you full of air to facilitate the operation & getting rid of it was agony,. My daughter gave me peppermint sweets, oil & capsules & that cured the problem in no time.

P. S. Don't want to discourage you but mine herniated again about a year later, something that sometimes happens with a keyhole procedure. However, the specialist said this isn't a problem & it hasn't been.
