Hello everyone,

I am organizing with my friend a golf trip in August (4 days) and we were deciding the destination. We are considering Cornwall or Liverpool area. Do you have any suggestion on which may have better weather or courses that have particular offers if you stay and play or twilight rates? I know about Saunton and Formby but I would like to have some suggestions from you :)

Thank you for all the suggestions I will receive

Depends on Cost really.

Cornwall - the best courses are - St enodoc, Perranporth, Trevose & St Mellion
Devon - Saunton (x2), Royal North Devon & also East Devon

Liverpool sells itself but the courses will cost a lot more if you want open rota ones.

either way, you cant go wrong

Hi maka,

Try these out:-

http://www.englandsgolfcoast.com/

They have bundle deals available.

A full on comp, been running about 6-7 years, 2 great courses, and 2 very good ones. It is in September though, but a lot cheaper than paying for all of them separately. Stay in Liverpool, they are all within 15-20 miles, and all can be accessed via train from Liverpool.

A pity they only have one place left, as happens in August. might still be worth contacting them, saying your coming from Italy - you never know.

Cornwall has slightly better weather, but our girls are more lovely, and the nightlife in Liverpool is second to none. Cornwall's courses are more spread out and traffic is very heavy in Cornwall in August.

I believe a lot of clubs have their maintenance week in August - something you may want to check with the clubs direct.

A little update, we have decided to go for the Liverpool area since we have found a very cheap flight from Italy.

We will play:
- Formby (staying 1 night in the dormy house)
- Southport & Ainsdale
- Royal Birkdale
- West Lancs

Would have loved to play Hillside instead of West Lancs but they had a competition that day. We will stay in Southport the other nights.
I have never played these courses and never been to Southport, so any info from you guys would be more than appreciated! :)
Ciao

Good choice - Hesketh is also worth playing - you can probably get a good deal (also see the Olympic trophy from the last time golf was in the olympics£

Wow, that is a cracking trip you have to look forward to.

Formby is a nice gentle introduction, but with good close scenery.

S & A is probably a notch up in difficulty, and more links like.

Birkdale is top notch, and tough.

West lancs is brutally hard, if windy.

Southport is a decent little seaside town, with lots of restaurants, but the pubs arent "lively".

Shame you couldn't get Hillside in, the 2nd best course on that coast.

If you fancy one of the best nights out in the UK, get the train into Liverpool (40 mins on the train, probably less than 5 Euros), and either get the last train back between 11-12 pm, or 3-4 in a taxi should be approx 50-60 Euros.

Enjoy, you'll love it.

Thank you for the hint Canmore, I didn't know about the Olympic trophy! I don't think we will make it to another course this time, but we will come back for sure! :)

Thanks Liverbirdie, I know, it's a shame about Hillside, we would have liked to stay 1 night more sleeping at Royal Lytham dormy house and doing Royal Lytham + Hillside but the flight deal was too good. It will make a good second trip! :)

I realized I didn't do a little recap of our trip, so here it is :)

I have never been in the Southport area to play, but I did went there in 2012 to watch the Open at Lytham.

We arrived in the evening and went straight to Formby where we had dinner and slept in the dormy rooms, they were very nice and confortable but a bit cold since I think the windows are pretty old and they need a fix.
Next morning we played the course and we had a great time! FOr sure one of the best courses I have played, a real gem that I would like to play again and again.

After Formby we wento to play S&A. Not comparable to Formby overall but a great test of golf. Maybe there are 2 or 3 holes that are not visually appealing but some other are very nice and testing. I especially liked the approach on the 18th with the clubhouse in the background.

The next morning we played Royal Birkdale. Clubhouse is fantastic, a true golf museum. Regarding the course I would like to hear your opinions as well because I was not very impressed with it, it's a great test of golf but I find hard to remember more than 5 holes (I remember all the 18 at Dornoch for example)... great dunes, bunkering and green but I think it lacks something. If I had to go back to the area I would play FOrmby over Birkdale anytime.

We finished our trip at West Lancs. Unfortunately the weather was miserable especially during the back 9, but I enjoyed the layout and I think it is also a great test of golf.

I would love to go back to play Hillside and Formby again :)

Thanks for reading

Ciao Makaveli, come stai. Noticed you are from the Milano area. E Tifosi Inter or Milano. possible Juve. I have good friends that live north of Milan near Saronno. Ceriano Laghetto, Solaro area. Anyway as you have your dreams of playing some of our rain drenched courses, one of my dreams is to play the course at Monza. It looks stunning 20-30 mins drive from Ceriano. Did read up that course is going to be used for a major comp in the near future. Graze mille Tashyboy.
