I think I am basically a republican (small r). That is until I watch the Presidential elections in the US! Seems to be a huge waste of money and time to elect a President who often has little real power because the Congress and Senate always seem to be controlled by the opposition party. This makes our Monarchy seem almost sensible, because we have a Head of State who is outside politics! :mmm:

P.S. The Queen vs Donald Trump? No contest! :)

I expect there are a lot of people who believe our head of state is a waste of money - also they are pretty much purely ceremonial and little if any power tbh. Country is run by the government just as it is in the states

The US President is prob one of the most powerful men in the world and believe it to be false he has little power

How much power does the queen hold over the politics of the country?

In theory she has to approve the nomination of the Prime Minister and can veto legislation. However these powers are rarely if ever used. I believe that she has been a stabilising influence over the years, as she has regular meetings with the Prime Minister of the day.

It is a rather spurious comparison, though, isn't it? The choice isn't one or the other, there are other options.

The Royals get massive wealth and privilege through an accident of birth. They are most certainly not outside politics, very recently there have been some relations about how they interfere in the political process secretly. No wonder they are happy to keep apparently quiet.

The US Presidential election is often a circus, but this time round it has set a new standard. But last couple of times, they got the first African-American President who did a pretty good job in face of the operation placed before him.

No chance of a black Queen or King in the UK.

I am happy with us having a Queen or King as a figurehead but we have overdone it. The extended Royal family is too big and expensive. If we are going to have a Monarchy then it should be much smaller and less elite. Look to some of the other European countries for models.

Or even a Catholic one:o

Off with their heads! ;)

Ok not really but let's send them off to quiet retirement somewhere rather than spending £millions decorating their many homes.

The Monarchy is a good debate

For me they bring in a lot of money to the country via tourism

http://www.theatlantic.com/internat...-british-royal-family-worth-the-money/278052/

The British tourism agency has reported that the royal family generates close to 500 million pounds, or about $767 million, every year in tourism revenue,

Obviously a lot would still visit the palaces and castles but a lot also come to see the Royals and purchase the royal memorabilia etc

But they do cost £30 mil a year plus the added money on security and transport etc etc

How much money they bring to the country is always dubious. Paris seems to cope pretty well without a royal family, plenty of tourists there. People come to see the buildings and history, they don't expect to see the monarch in person.

I have never understood the debate of no monarch therefore we have to have a president. We can do without either.

The monarch has no political power, nor should they. Even the weekly meeting with the PM is an insult IMO.

The monarchy like politics, banks, business has its faults there are alternatives to the crown/ Queen and some changes are afoot. But as far as Tashyboy is concerned I am a royalist. Always have been and always will be.

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN.
Ahem

To have to swear allegiance to presidents Thatcher, Major, Blair and Cameron over the yeara would turn my stomach. As someone on here said the other week which made me chuckle. I would sooner Bite my arm off and beat myself to death with the bloody stump than sing save god save the pressy.
Strangely. Talk to most tourists and they love the royal family. Though i have a feeling none have actually met them. The point someone raised re how much the royal family raises theough tourism is actually not wrong. The same could be said about how much business is generated through royal influence. They did us no harm in supporting the olympics aswell. Plus queenie jumped out of an helicopter for the olympic cause.

You would not necessarily need to swear allegiance to a President, as someone said you don't have to have one. You could swear allegiance to the constitution or Republic.

The constitution of Iron maggies party and afore mentioned turns my stomach.

The Constitution is not a political party, it's the set of principals your country holds as it's legal means for existance and as such is party political independent. Noting at all to do with Maggie or her party.

Would it benefit the Tories, like moving electoral boundaries if not it wouldn't happen. I don't see anything broke that needs fixing.

The whole royalty thing is ceremonial and in its simplest terms makes money for the country. I deal with people from around the world on a daily basis and what is very clear is that they see royalty as an important symbol of Britain and being British. Another thing that quickly becomes clear is that they envy it.
