I've just had an email from the 'bank'. It reads.

"Dear HSBC Customer.

Your internet Banking security number was entered incorrectly more than 3 times.
For the protection of your account we have suspended access to it.
To restore access please 'log on' (link) correctly.

Previous notifications have been sent.

Thank you for choosing HSBC Bank."

Needless to say it's a fraud. I've spoken to the bank and they confirmed this. They also warned me that they are also using other banks ie. NatWest etc.

Do not click on the link.

I know most of you are aware of such antics, but some others that you know may not be. Please spread it around.

It is a classic example of Phishing, I get dozens of these each week even from banks that I do not bank with.

If you do as they say, you are simply giving away access to your bank account

The golden rule is, Never respond to any suspect email,Worst case scenario they will steal your identity and empty your account,

Best case they will know that they have an active email address and they will simply send more junk your way.

So dont do it

I get these and I forward them to an email address at hsbc. They know what's going on, but they don't seem to be doing anything about it.

There's another scam going on a.t.m. where a company from Manchester phones "from Swinton insurance" to tell you that your car insurance is due. If you say, "oh, yes my car is due about now", they'll take your cash never to be seen again.

I asked them to tell me which car and which reg and which date, which they couldn't answer.

Muppets. But I bet some people are falling for it.

Thanks Dave.

In fact, why don't we keep this running as a 'scams' thread. Just post what you think may be useful info to pass on to others.

My most recieved must be search engine optimisation spam emails and cold calls. A little searching on the web and it all becomes clear exactly what's going on. But it's so easy for peope to be duped by them. They're good at getting folks to sign up, but that's about it. We're not just talking a few quid, but thousands.

Beware the telephone 000 call. Do not answer as it's probably from Nigeria or elsewhere. I had at least 15 attempts over 2 weeks but let the call go to the answer machine. They have now given up; cross fingers.

if you see a link in these emails. hover your mouse over the link without clicking, it then displays the address of the link, and that lets you know if its genuine. i have spoken to my bank many times about this and along with not clicking, this was their advice.

I get several of these every week, but when it comes from the bank you use, and does look convincing, you can see how some people do fall foul of them. And it only takes a few for them to make money.

The worst one yet is when a man comes to the door and claims he needs to see your bottom for a survey he's doing. He's lying...he just wants to see your bottom.

I feel so violated. And not in a good way!

TimBridle... is that one of your fantasies?

I recently had nigerians trying to scam me when i was selling my car on Autotrader. First they phoned me then when i tried to call back to tell them to feck off, they sent an email which went like this...

Dear xxxxx,
Thanks for your response. The person in question must be my son, the phone is with him. I want it for my nephew as a birthday present. What is the last asking price and can you please send some pictures if possible.
Thanks,
Jane.

I then emailed back asking if they were nigerian.

The emailed me this back...

"What is the meaning of this? I will not sit back here to allow you deform my character. You better sell your car to someone else."

It made me chuckle.
