I'm tall, I need longer clubs.

Following on from a current thread about driver shaft lengths and how shorter shafts lead to greater accuracy how about this. Most people, irrespective of their height, if they stand with hands by their side, will have their hands roughly the same distance from the ground. This distance is what a lot of clubfitters use to determine the proper shaft length and therefore a person's height does not dictate the optimum shaft length.

Also, as far as accuracy is concerned, surely the important factor is the combined shaft & arm length. On the basis that taller players are likely to have longer arms does this make them intrinsically less accurate than shorter players & would they benefit from shorter, not longer, shafts. Perhaps this is the reason why there are not a lot of world class really tall players.

Discuss.

I'm 6.1 and ironically due to a longer upper body and shorter lower require my clubs to be either 1* flat or stock. It's ironic as I know a couple of 5.10/5.11 players who have long lower bodies and short uppers, one runs stock and one runs 1* up +1"

Same here, I'm 5'11½" with an inside leg of 30½". I have to have my irons 3° flat and even that is not quite enough. My swing looks flat but with short legs & long arms it can't be anything else. I suspect that Matt Kuchar is a similar build. I've tried to find out if his clubs lie flat but I can't.

I am just under 6,4ft and +1/2 is what suits me best, I am also supposed to have everything 2* upright but it just doesn't suit my eye and I find it off putting. I just have them tweaked to 1* upright.

Interesting never thought along them lines just assumed tall/ shorter players might benefit from different clubs, good to be educated:thup:

My understanding is a static fits just gives an idea of shaft length, the closer your hands are to the floor, the shorter the shaft required:

your swing plane and so on denotes the lie

I am 6'1'' and my irons are 1/4'' longer, and have a yellow dot (ping). It fits right with their chart. My woods are standard.

most specialist fitters would look to put irons into a real tall golfer that were as long as they could control (given no arm length peculiarities) after looking at height and posture at set-up and also dynamic swing action

one issue is making them the shaft length they need to be often times can make the overall club too heavy - with fits for x-tall Tour Pros they then often times look to lose club head weight in the irons as a bunch of pro's would no doubt attest to if they went on record (so far the only one I know has is Sweden's Robert Karlsson)

exceptions to everything - but as a general rule real tall guys have more upright swings - would encourage anyone who is in this 'real tall class' to look at RK swing set-up and top of swing position in 2015 after his 'eye issues' and look at what he's working on
- although one of, if not the tallest at 6' 5" he uses his height with great posture (Stenson too) if you check out the spine angle to legs etc and top position with lead arm little ways more upright to shoulder plane
although he is tall and swing is more 'upright' he is still short of shaft parallel at the top

given the height with the big arc one thing to consider it takes longer to get back to the ball as bigger distance to travel so it's definitely better, my take, not to swing past parallel or maybes even to parallel at the top
if anyone tries the above out this the top position if looking back on a dtl vid will 'appear' to be laid off - but it isn't

if a real tall guy has too much spine angle lean at set-up it can cause a bunch of issues with also balance and take back off the ball and also importantly too, plane - which in turn will give strike contact issues

would encourage anyone who fits into the above 6' 2" (maybes even 6', 6' 1") if they have strike/plane issues to search out Robert Karlsson dtl of 2015 and look at posture set-up top of swing position also Stenson set-up look at the angles of the spine from the hip sockets in relation to leg angles how the balance looks grounded through the laces at set-up

My 6 iron is 39.5" long with a 60* lie angle the rest of the irons feed off that. I'm 6'5" and was re fitted at a loft and lie session at St Andrews Links Custom Fit.

At 6'3" Ernie Els is surely a good example, as well as R Karlsson and H Stenson, for taller players to look at.

That longer than my 4 iron! That must have a significant effect on swingweight. I added 1½" to my last set & probably overdid it, they were a shade too heavy. How do yours feel?

I'm used to them now but I still catch myself feeling a bit sceptical about the length and the weighty feel of them. I'm going for a full bag fitting session with a possible view on getting some new clubs this year so will be very interested to see what the fitter thinks. I originally got fitted at the Mizuno factory in Cumbernauld and was 1.5" longer than standard.

I am also 6'4" tall and have my irons are between 1/2 and 1 & 1/2 " longer plus varying degrees adjusted for lie.

This came about as originally it was clear I needed longer clubs but during a wedge fitting last year it was pointed out that the additional length does change depending on the club (wedges now 1/2" longer - 4 iron is 1&1/2" longer)

Most interesting was when I experimented with shaft length on my woods. I have TM driver / 3 wood / 5 wood and struggled with the 3 and 5 until I put driver / shaft in the 3 wood and 3 wood shaft in the 5 wood. Almost instantly cured my struggles with these clubs.
