I actually heard this on Saturday much to my despair...

Saturday roll up, 9.12 tee time, packed to the hills with 4 balls, we are the 1st three ball to tee off. Waited on the tee, could see group ahead mid-fairway, group ahead of them on green, but hey, it's Saturday morning, I'm with friends, no probs.

4th tee, man comes storming over to us from 3rd green:

"You need to be playing up behind these guys ahead, you're taking too long."

Us: There's nowhere to go. There are 4 balls backed up all up the (par 5) 4th.

Him: "Well, I'M ON THE COMMITTEE, and I'm telling you to push them. It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to play up behind them."

Of course, an argument ensued where his parting words were "Your arguing with me which is holding us up more".

What an absolute *infractional offence*!

He then proceeded to march across the fairway to the group up ahead of us when they reached the 5th (which, BTW had 2 other groups on) to tell them the same thing.

I've been a member at Merrist Wood in Guildford since April, and I've met some lovely blokes & ladies, but this guy was an utter moron.

The best part? By the SI1 13th, his group had dropped a hole behind us. Yet no-one played through...

If you are keeping up with the group in front then would just politely tell him to where to go

We were. In fact, the 4 ball 4 groups ahead were keeping up with the 4 ball ahead of them, as were every other group on the course. Just a slow day on the course.

We played the front 9 in 2 hours 15 mins. That might be slow to some, but for a field packed with 4 balls in less than favorable weather, we certainly weren't complaining. If we didn't have to wait on most of the tees on the front 9 it would have been 2 hours.

Committee-itis!

Will normally go away if ignored! :D But severe cases can be painful!

Careful though! It can be contagious! :mmm:

As long as are maintaining the same distance behind the group in front that existed when you teed off on the 1st, you are fine! 'Pushing up' sounds more like 'crowding' rather than simply 'keeping up' to me!

4.5 hours is more than acceptable. I've had 5 hour rounds on a summer day at that place!

His 'pushing' was in fact 'fire a ball up at them and if you hit them tell them it's their fault for being slow'.

And yes, I would have LOVED to have walked back and asked them to let the guys behind them play through! Not worth it though...

A 4.5 hour round on a busy day in bad weather isn't bad going is it?

Yes it is slow.

However, the committee man's method of dealing with it was completely wrong. It is easier and better to pull from the front than push from the back.

Identify the slow group at the head of things and move them along, don't try firing balls up the backsides of innocent people.

I would have pointed out his request would result in you driving at people in range before politely telling him to go away (or using a more anglo saxon phrase) and told him his request was stupid and dangerous and that you'd be seeing what the manager or captain (depending on how its run) thought of his interference and ridiculous request. enjoyment. It's trumped up little jobsworth's like this that are the real scourge of golf club membership

You should have marched across to his fairway and returned the compliment.
Seriously I would report this guy to the Captain and see what he has to say.

The pro came out on the buggy when we were on the 6th fairway to let everyone know the course was playing slow. We told him what had happened, he told us to report it to the manager, which we have done. I don't like being a tell-tale, but when the pro suggests it I think there must be reason e.g. the guy is a trouble maker or has a history of being holy-ier than thou. Hopefully we'll see some action taken. I understand the group in front who were also spoken to have done the same.

Well done for reporting him.
This kind of confrontation can totally ruin a game of golf both for your group and most likely his playing partners (and is this case the group in front as well).

Takes all sorts , sadly slow play is a fact of life , winter time and saturday is always slow anyway and not much you can do about it or anywhere you can go . Its a reason i don`t really play much on saturday in the winter

I find this quite interesting, it's a focus of the game at the moment that slow play is an issue, here you have someone trying to keep the speed of the course up (although appreciate in a very poorly delivered way) and the response is annoyance at him and a report to the manager.

Pro on the other hand just tells people the course is playing slow and that's fine.

You don't want to be firing balls at the group in front, but maybe he thought that by backing off you weren't in a position to immediately play when they left the green. No big deal if you're relaxed about it but if all on the course were doing this then perhaps it could significantly slow the pace over 20-30 groups.
