After getting narked off with my ball striking this year, I decided to seek professional help - my 2nd ever golf lesson.

Lessons are bloody good aren't they!!

My main observation from it - those that say you have to get worse before getting better.........find a different pro!

"When" I did what I was being instructed to do, it was great. I looked like someone who could play.

If you are with someone and you are doing what they are instructing AND you are hitting it worse - get rid and go see someone else.

who have you gone to see?

My handicap has fallen from 5.6 to 2.8 since i've been working with my coach. Speaks volumes if you ask me!

that was the answer i thought you would give me. a number of my mates work with him

I had the choice between him or Simon over at Bowood.

The right pro, giving good advice, in the right way for that pupil, is very useful.

Everyone is different and so finding the right pro is difficult. I've used two in recent times - one was very technical with every gadget and computer/camera aid, the other has only used his mobile once to take a photo. Both have helped me develop a good swing with solid fundamentals, in there various ways. Now I just need to learn how to score better in order to make full use of the lessons!

I went back to my old pro at my club no gadgets apart from a short video on his phone against the guy at the range who used Trackman i felt id turned into a Robot having to get certain numbers i lost the feel for my swing and my handicap had shot up to 14 not very good . Anyway 4 lessons later with my old pro and I've got back hitting the ball like i did years ago I've had 2 buffers and 1.7 in handicap cuts in the other 2 comps i played and back to 12:thup:

Guy that I saw has all the gear but said it can be a distraction for some pupils. He had one guy who was off the mat and looking for his numbers on the screen before the ball had reached the top of its flight.

I like having lessons and am probably odd in that I'm really happy to do a lesson indoors on a Trackman type set up but equally ok with a pro who just watches me, my ball flight etc and changes things. I guess it's just results based!

Its all about the Right pro for the right person

Me and my friend started playing similar times (I had played when I was a teenager but given up for years) anyways this was 2012.. We both had lessons at our club and he couldnt get on with the pro.. Me being cheap couldnt turn down a deal of 5 1/2 lessons for £50.. so I continued to have lessons with him until 2015.. in that time my mate got down to about 19 I stayed at 28.. my lessons would be show up.. be told my swings too narrow.. suddenly hit better then leave.. (lots of chatting in between about everything but golf)

2015 I took the plunge and switched to a pro from the same centre as my friend and he took my swing back to basics and worked up.. first was my posture, then my grip then slowly I got better and more consistent.. in my society im off 28 still as majority of events I score 30 or so points but in my own scorecard keeping I am now off 23.. its going in the right direction

Unfortunately my pro has now left the country.. so I am changing to another one down the centre however they all seem very knowledgable (its a scott cranfield centre after all) so fingers crossed

I also watch a lot of video instructions online by Piers and Andy from me and my golf TV.. does anyone else use these? I think their fantastic

I would say it depends on the change

I was massively out to in and took me a while and a lot of pain to get anywhere near neutral.

Since getting an inside path the changes are easier to implement as they are no longer a big change.

I'm a big advacate of lessons if you have an issue or simply want to improve.

I they're possibly the two most annoying people on the planet alongside crossfield

Had a lesson with the guy I've used for a while. Nothing fancy other than a video on my phone. Got me hitting it lovely, and only a couple of small tweaks. Took it out in a comp on Saturday and hit the buffer swinging what I thought was poorly and hit the buffer so definitely some positive vibes from that. Mind you I went to the range tonight and I'm not sure what Messrs Finch and Shiels have done to deserve me. Too bogged down in trying to swing perfectly as per the lesson and too quick. When I did what I was shown last week and just stood there it was lovely again. Roll on the weekend and next week and see how it really stacks up

Crossfield ill give you.. seems to talk a little too much without showing actual results.. plus his voice is annoying lol

however Piers and Andy seem good lads , up for a laugh and do a hell of a lot of videos of tips which I find very useful at times. Whats not to like about them?

Nahhhhhhh you don't wanna do that, Lessons!!! Rack up, put a small white ball on a piece of wood and whack it with a stick with a head on end of it....... Lessons make the game more complicated surely, it's only something we do as a hobby and play for fun! Why would you wanna get better at it?

Why would anyone not have lessons

could not imagine anything worse than staying as a bad golfer

Dont have to have lessons to become a good player

Horse for courses

Some will have lessons and it works for them - others will have lessons but will not improve

Sadly as someone for whom no sport ever came easily, any success I've had in golf and other sports has been down to coaching and hard work. Golf in particular never came easily and I worked very hard with the pro at my first club as a junior to get something that worked and worked often.

These days while I'll never get back as low as I ever did in the 80's I remain convinced I can get back to or close to single figures and to get there, I feel I need tuition. Aside from that I enjoy the process of learning and trying to improve

I agree you dont have to have lessons, but i also believe your 'ceiling' will be a lot lower if you dont
