If there is sweep money or a trophy then this guy should be DQ'd. We have all had the expense of buying conforming gear and this fan dan can't just waltz in with his old cheat stick and clean up. NOt a chance. Get him booted out.

Look at it another way, you get a mulligan for every shot he plays with it!

Only joking of course, Its DQ time I'm afraid, it's been on the cards that this would happen ever since the first indication that these clubs would be illegal. Thats only four years or so..

On a simillar topic, 2 of my regular playing group have illegal drivers and both have refused to change them, despite numerous comments, jokes and well timed observations ;). The argument is that the new clubs would hit the ball further so why the need to change?
I can understand this, but rules are rules, and as they have not yet entered a club comp' yet I cant see the situation changing. potentially though it could be very awkward come the first club comp' they want to enter. They're both close mates who i've known for many many years but this still annoys the crap out of me. :(

In bounce games, who cares, and they are right, they probably would hit it further with new clubs anyway.

But card in hand - your club is going to DQ then the minute they hand in their cards anyway surely? :D

Illegal is Illegal and even if I don't agree witha rule I will always, without doubt abide by it.

The rules of golf are the rules and not obeying them is in my eyes, disrespectful to the game itself.

This applies whether it be competitive play or a 11-hole knock after work.

Does anyone else outside your fourball know that they're still using non-conforming drivers? If so, that takes the pressure off you a bit but if not, it could be up to you and you alone to take that stand. If I were you, I would point out to them that they can't legally play in a club competition with those clubs and if they try to do so, you'll have no option but to turn them in. I wouldn't say it in those exact words of course but I'd make sure they got the idea. Best to warn them in advance rather than wait till one of them shoots a net 63 and expects to clean up.

If these guys are worthy of the name 'golfer', they should have no problem sticking to the rules - or do they expect you to bend them for their benefit?

Johng,

Please don't tell us your playing partners STILL use the old British size golf balls, too. Get them telt, as they say. Why do they think the new rules don't apply to them?

A couple of other guys at the club know about their drivers being illegal, but as they have yet to enter a comp' it's not worth creating too much fuss at present. Hopefully they'll either get new drivers or leave them out of the bag before they tee off. we don't use any starters so outside of individual responsibility the only policing is through playing partners. i'm sure it won't get to the point of DQ'ing them though, hopefully.

We had an official R & A Notice up on the noticeboard for all of last season. It clearly stated the date when the use of "Non Conforming" clubs would come into effect, I'm sure it gave web site details for the official lists of Conforming and Non Conforming Drivers. Anyone who went to the noticeboard to enter their names in any of the many competitions had the opportunity to read this notice. It was place adjacent to the handicap list so all could easily find it!

There really should be no excuse for using a non conforming version of any club.

The rule is ther for all golfers-they cant take an a la carte view of the rules-they might as well tee the ball up in the fairway & rough, ground their clubs in hazards and bunkers as play with the illegal clubs.

You need to keep reminding them of their obligations and duties-if that fails turn them in.

sorry but i forgot to add that the lad in question is the son one of the directors of the club.my view is that he should loose all his points he's accumulated during the start of the year.i know it's a new rule but he's had plenty notice as the rest of us had.

I'm firmly in the DQ camp. He has had as much opportunity as everyone else and frankly the "I'm handicapping myself by not hitting it as far" excuse is utter crap.

DQ and lose all the pints is my take. As for using the banned club in a medal, I'd report him. If the handicap or comeptition committee do nothing I'd raise the matter formally. If you are as close as you say he should understand why you are doing what you are to preserve the sanctitity of competitive play.

If you get pressure from the directors I'd raise it formally at committee level.

Let us know the outcome

And don't forget rule 1-3 applies, too. This states that players must not agree to exclude the operation of any rule or to waive any penalty incurred.

Penalty for breach of rule 1-3

Matchplay; Disqualification of BOTH sides
Strokeplay; Disqualification of COMPETITORS concerned.

Basically, Johng, if anyone playing with this guy disregards the fact that he is using an illegal driver then they will be DQ'd, too. Not very friendly of him.
