Come across this show a couple of times this week and is quite interesting. In essence once Mr Criminal is caught, a lot of his ill gotten gains are confiscated then sold at auction. Some of the items are astounding. The show goes on to say that the auction house is just outside of London, but also it is not advertised. So why and where is it.

A couple of Police Forces have Ebay sites, Leics Police sell everything from clothing to cars on their's

One assumes all avenues are explored to return items first and these are ones simply unclaimed. Otherwise imagine getting burgled and then seeing your family heirloom in full glory getting flogged in some auction house

No Homer, this programme targets big boy criminals, it tells you why they are after them, once they are caught they are confiscating goods that have been bought through I'll gotten gains, ie tax evasion, drugs, fraud, money laundering etc. It's not the joe scrote that robs your house. Anything from Bentley cars to boats are being sold with Rolex and everything else chucked in.

odd thing was a couple of years ago I stumbled across the Leicester police eBay site. Then added it as a favourite.

With your normal everyday items that might get taken in a burglary, if an insurance claim is paid out on the item then if it is subsequently recovered it belongs to the insurance company and no longer the person that originally owned it. In much the same way that if you have a car accident and the insurance pays out they then own what is left of the car. No idea if you could return the money that the insurance paid you to get your item back in return.

Am I missing something here? Surely it is in the national interest to publicise these auctions to gat as much as possible for the confiscated items? So why all the secrecy? Why aren't the auctions advertised?

Sweep that is exactly my point? Why?

There are a few sites that are easy to find, but not this. Don't know if it's not advertised on BBC coz of the advertising laws or not.

Local Police force auctions used to be advertised. Not sure what happens now as I've not seen anything in the local paper up here...
