There is a lot of huge hitters of the ball nowadays, but how would Sandy Lyle in his heyday going full on with his driver do against the big hitters of the day??? A friend of mine once saw Sandy hit a 3 wood onto a short par 4 green!
I remember back in 1988 at the British Masters Peter Allis saying live on air that Sandy's drive at the last par 5 of the event was ridiculously long,he needed a sand wedge for his 2nd!

The problem is that very few are going full on nowadays!

Having watched Noren go after it with Joe M at the King's of Distance event you realise just how much they are holding back in order to maintain absolute accuracy.

That said he was definitely long!

I saw Lyle and Faldo play a practice round at Royal Wimbledon the year Lyle won (I think from memory) and he was at least ten-fifteen past Faldo. He was silly long using persimmon woods and balata balls

I watched Lyle lip out for a 2 on a par 5, great striker, he would guess he would be 10 yards off the tee and almost a club short of Bubba..

Still pretty long

Saw Lyle at St. George's when he won; never mind the driver, he'd have given most people a good run for their money with that Ping 1 iron that he used.

There's a bunker 2/3rds of the way down the first at The Oxfordshire.
About 300 to carry it if I remember...
Sandy carried it and found the bunker beyond it during the first B&H there....with that 1 iron....
OK it's downhill but........
