If putting is so important....

I guess to be on tour you have to be quite good at all lengths of putt. When you're playing 5-6 days a week, someties for months on end, you develop a feel for length especially if the greens are as good as the ones they putt on week in week out.

I don't know. Maybe a mallet style, centre shafted for accuracy, blade style for lag? Different shaft lengths, weighting, etc.

I can't see why certain putters would be designed for certain putts, far as i'm aware you don't get a putter that is specifically designed for lag putting, short putts etc.

If Driving is so important why does a Tour Pro not take 2 out - 1 for Draws and 1 for fades. Saves having to change swing.

Oh - sorry.

Been done - by Mickleson to win the Masters a few years ago and it hasn't been done since.

It's a waste of a club to have 2 of anything.
Learn to use the ones you have.

I've had two drivers in the bag for a year, just taken the Callaway out as Pieman threatened to snap it at Woodhall (I out hit him by MILES and he's the jealous type!) ;)

Don't see why having two putters would be an issue, I use two different grips for putting (one for lagging and one for 10foot and in). Would use two putters if I had confidence in each to do their job.

Struggle with 1 let alone 2! I agree with JustOne with the 2 different styles though as I have been using that for while with a relative degree of success!

They don't carry two because they don't need to. The funny thing is most pros spend the majority of the practice time on the short game components including putting and not hitting 300 yard drives. Perhaps there is a lesson to be learned.

Two of any club is a waste and Mickleson only got away with it by dropping a long iron but still had the repetoire to produce the necessary shots. If it was such a viable idea it would have been done ages ago. In fact it says more about how little faith Mickleson had in his driving than any attempt to gain an advantage on the field

Hmmmnn....not so strange an idea.

My favourite ever putter was freakily inconsistent from long range. Close to the hole, I loved it.
Now, if you'd offered me my current putter and told me to use that ONLY over 6 foot and swap for short ones, I'd give it a go, why not? :)
However, I don't think pros worry about speed/pace that much. Sure, they hit the odd one short/long but I can't see any playing with two.
f.w.i.w. if you ask me, high MOI mallets are the best for long range but not as good as a blade-type near the hole. Not everyone would agree though, I'm sure.

I am sure before this years masters in the week leading up to it leftie was going to go with 3 yes 3 drivers in the bag, dont know why exactly then a couple of days before he got abit more confident and had planned his bag with 2 drivers only for the wind on the opening day to be blowing a different way which meant he went down to 1 driver and replaced it with a iron of some kind. Pretty sure this was on the preview of the masters on sky.

I can understand what the original poster is saying if you feel you had good distance control with one then it may make sense to have 2 putters. A bit like those who carry an 8 iron and a chipper. Technically same degree but one brings more confidence in the shape around the greens.

Sergio carried two putters in the accenture one year I think that says it all really. Anyone with any amount of confidence in their putting only needs to take one. Most pro's whichever type of putter they have lose very few shots 3 putting. Similarly they gain very few shots sinking the long ones. Making the 6-10 footers are what can make significant differences to a score.

Interesting point.

I'd love to have a different putter in the bag for one of those days where the 3 - 6 footers seems like 20 footers.

Not convinced it would ever happen as it's kinda admitting you have no faith in your putting and it would look stupid changing clubs on every green.

I completely disagree with you there mate. Phil is a hugely intelligent guy and is prepared to think outside the box when it comes to course management and how to play the game (much like Tiger...)

He put two drivers in as he felt there were certain spots on the course where he wanted an extra 15-20 yards of carry to clear certain bunkers etc etc so he went with like a 7 degree, if memory serves, and a 10.5 for other holes where he wanted the 15-20 yards less and more accuracy.

Theres no difference between carrying two drivers and carrying a 3 wood AND a 5 wood... They are all just woods with different degrees of loft, designed to go different distances. Phil carryed two woods to go two different distances!

The only reason why anyone even noticed is because the word "driver" is used to describe a 1 wood. If drivers were called 3 woods, and 3 woods called 5 woods, 5 woods called 7 woods etc, and suddenly Phil put a 1 wood in his bag (with less loft), nobody would bat an eyelid...

Anyway Phil may well have had doubts over his driving but he still won the damn tournament!!
