Having an Interesting chat at work today regarding players your team has sold that are still playing at the top level. Being a Liverpool fan Torres, Alonso, Mascherano and Arbeloa spring to mind. But my mate mentioned about the players that Arsenal have lost that are still playing at the top level. HE said the Arsenal setup would look something like this:

Sagna------Vermalan-------Toure-------A Cole

-----------------Fabregas--------------------

------Corzola--------------Nasri--------------

--Gervinio-------Van Persie------Podolski---

NOt bad eh, now look at the reserve team they would have:

Gibbs----Mertasaker---Koschielny----Clichy

---------------Song----------------------

-----Arteta-------------Wilshire-----------

Walcott------Adebayour--------Arshavin--

The best bit is these have not even been named Oxlade-Chamberlain, Giroud, Rosicky, Ramsey, Diaby, Santos, Djourou.

No wonder he gets annoyed every transfer window when he watches players leaving the club. You would never have all those players in the club at the same time, but what if they had just kept hold of some more than they have, then what a team.

How good would your team be if they had kept some more players?

Oh noooo!

I hate looking at the team that might have been if only the mighty Boro hadn't been a selling club. Winning the Milk Cup in 2004, and going on to play in the final of the UEFA cup in 2006 - relegated in 2009

Schwarzer, Wheater, Huff, Neil Young, Jamie Morrison(far better player than Stuart Downing), Stuart Downing, Adam Johnson, Danny Graham(transferred to Watford and now with Swansea)... and I can think of quite a few that although they may have been starting to wane they would have kept us up. Yakubu, Mark Viduka, Job, Zenden and a whole host of academy squad players that had something about them.

And then Strachen came in and spent a fortune of Scottish League cast off's... I've had counselling, medication and the Samaritan's are on speed dial....

Thing is, I doubt half the players bought would be there. Arteta wouldn't, I doubt mertersacker would and so on. Nasri can still piss off though.

It is only a theoretical thing. my mate was going on more about how if Arsenal could have kept hold of some of those players how they would be at the top as genuine title contenders every year like they were 10 years ago. Imagine with the players they have brought in this year if they just had kept Cole, Van Persie and Fabregas.

Wish Huddersfield hadn't sold Dennis Law to Man City in 1960..........what could have been.....:whoo:

Or Rhodes to Blackburn.;)

If we hadn't let Steve Sidwell leave in 2007, we would not have been relegated on goal difference, and spent four years trying to get back into the Premiership.

They may look good on paper, but Arsenal have had a lot of bottlers over the years, lots of them listed.

I can list a Liverpool one as you have, but you already mention most of them.

West Ham would be one of the best though, Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole, Lampard,Defoe, Glen Johnson, Di Canio, Tevez, Mascherano, Carrick just to be getting on with.

not a everton fan but they have sold many a good player. What ever happened to Danny cadamatari (think that was his name) he had so much promise?

more recently players like rodwell rooney arteta etc...

I thnk Cadamateri has dropped so low, that he now plays in Scotland....... :)

Good point. Fabregas and RVP are missed by us gooners. I still rate Hleb. Another player who thought grass was greener over there but struggled to play for Birmingham.
Equally Citeh would be liked more if Goater still played for them.

To be honest I support the team and providing the 11 players on the pitch put the effort in I'm happy. Dempsey has shot his bolt. That said Fulham got rid of a few players that did OK at other clubs (Houghton etc) especially in the 80's and wondered why they nearly went out of the league.

The players I can think of in my time are Beckham, Tevez, Ronaldo and Gerard Pique, with the exception of Beckham all of those players would be good enough to get into the current Man Utd team which would potentially look like this:

Goalkeeper: Open for debate
Right back: Rafael
Centre backs: Pique, Vidic
Left back: Evra
Right mid: Valencia
Centre mids: Scholes, Carrick
Left mid: Ronaldo
Strikers: Rooney, Tevez/RVP

As a Villa fan...if we did not sell our midfield over the past few years our midfield and forwards would love like this

Young Milner Barry Dowling
Bent Agbonlahor
6 English player...very rare nowadays

You forgot Jimmy Flloyd Piggy Bank

Extending it to the European stage, can you imagine how good Ajax's teams would have been over the 80's and 90's if they had kept all of their players?

Indeed, we were/are one of the best 'nurseries'. Though we never really owned Mascherano or Tevez though!
