Thanks for sharing.........very apt in this good weather, essential knowledge for every parent especially.

Thanks, forwarded to my whole family who are about to come on holiday with us and our little one.

I heard on the TV that half the children that leave primary school at 11 could not swim 25 metres unaided. Amazing that a sport/skill that could save your life is ignored by so many schools/parents. My wife owns a swim school, and it doesn't take that many lessons for a child to become a competent swimmer. It is also one of the best forms of exercise, and something you can enjoy all your life.

I also heard that many kids are leaving school barely able to swim. Shocking testament to the way sport and physical education is stripped away from the school curriculum.

I don't think it is a shocking testament just to schools though. It's also the parents responsibility m actually more so imo that they make sure the child can swim.

Back to the OP though, thanks for sharing this a very informative and helpful guide for all us parents and for bystanders nearby to know this information

Living in Cornwall we have quiet a lot of water around us and in the summer there are so many people in the water and the noise is almost deafening it's hard to spot kids in trouble.
The strangest thing is the amount of children saved from drowning by surfers. For starters they have spent more time in the water than most of us have spent in the bath in our entire life, most down here surf all year round and have experience of people being close to drowning.
Fishermen on the cliffs have saved many kids from drowning as it's a perfect vantage point to see what is going on a long way away. It's also surprising how obvious one person not moving much in a crowd of heaving bodies in the sea can be.

It's terrible how often we hear of young people drowning down here when they have had a drink or two and go into the sea alone. It's even worse when you hear about a child drowning on a crowded beach.

Drowning can happen in almost an instant. Think how long you can hold your breath, think how long a child can hold its breath. Think how long you can turn your back on a child before they could drown. Many, many years ago in a galaxy far, far away a little 6yr old boy spotted a baby floating in a pool courtesy of the air trapped in his nappy. He jumped in and dragged the baby to the poolside whilst his friend ran to get help. He held the baby's head above water till the mother arrived. His own mother was about to tan his hide till the mother of the baby knocked on the door and explained what the 6yr old had done...

Don't hesitate, don't over analyse, just do it...
