Fnarr Fnarr etc

Looking for a cheap way of installing a stiff shaft in my Cleveland XL custom driver.

Ideally i want to experiment with a decent 2nd hand stiff shaft, before potentially changing driver, or buying a "proper" stiff shaft for mine. Upside of this is i could probably get a few quid for the current shaft (Fubuki Tour reg) as i believe that they are very highly regarded?

I am also struggling to locate anyone who sells the adapter (even Ebay).

Anyone know of a decent stiff shaft that i could potentially buy?

With the grip, adapter and shaft (plus assembly) i don't really want to spend more than 50 quid.

Is my budget to low? suspect it might be.

Thanks

There are too many variables, stiff is just the flex and there is no standard. It's going to be very difficult for anyone to give you an answer without a load more info.

Why do you want to change flex?

Go get fitted, prob cost about £80-90 for a cheaper shaft, more for more expensive.

Any reason for a change? The club is fantastic IMO, so low spin its unreal. Do consider a lesson first, change the shaft if the launch monitor stats suggest its very wrong or the pro suggests.

I have a stiff stock shaft and its a beaut!

The problem you have is that there are no standards so it is quite possible that you will put a "stiff" shaft in that isn't much if any firmer than your "regular". Your money is better spent on a fitting so you get it right first time.

Does CLassic XL not have a simple replaceable shaft mechanism? Via screw under cover at bottom of head?

Simply attach adapter to desired new shaft and whack it in!

Adapter should be available from Cleveland or a Club fitter - like Tour X?

Shaft to use also depends on what you want to achieve, if anything other than a being stiffer.

There are certainly a few shafts available either through the likes of Gamola or Fitters. Or second-hand through Ebay.

From what I understand, just because a shaft says stiff, doesn't mean all stiff shafts are the same. You have the torque number of the shaft, the amount of resistance a shaft has to twisting, you have different flex points on the shaft and can promote a certain type of ball flight, you have all that but as the Mark Crossfield video says, unless you are playing to a very high standard, the average club golfer is not going to be swinging a club consistently enough to notice the difference.

That said, if you go to any decent custom fitter, they should be able to tailor a club and shaft to your style of swing and within reason should be able to get pretty close to getting you a shaft that does what you want.

The rest after that is up to you.

I'm pretty sure most will be able to notice the difference. Whether they/we are consistent enough that it makes a difference may be debatable but if a shaft feels too soft it's definitely worth trying a stiffer one imo - simply from a confidence point of view.

No need for this, the guy is just trying to find his way...

I know, but the guy has a perfectly good club at present and is a 20 handicapper.
No offence meant to 20 handicappers, I was one myself but I got down through a lot of practice & lessons. It wasn't by messing around swapping and altering clubs. It was with rubbish Howson Derby Irons, persimmon headed/steel shafted Wilson Staff F/W woods and Howson regular shafted graphite driver.

Maybe I should have said "learn to play the game better..." rather than "properly".

My advice is get good, get fitted, and then stick with what you've got, for as long as they are the correct clubs.

Oh I think you are spot on in truth but it is hard not to get hooked on all the other bits when you really start to get into this game. Its all good, just seemed a little harsh :)

Sadly he does not say why he needs a stiff shaft or what he wants the effects of changing his shaft to be.... On a bad day I can make a high launch shaft go low and a low go high so for sure its hard to be fit right, specialy over the net

Eye, and I bet you lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. You used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t' mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when you got home your Dad would thrash you to sleep wi' his belt. ;)

As I high handicapper myself I do agree with the gist of what you said. But you must remember people are very quick to get offended nowadays.;)

I am not adverse to wasting my money on any thing that I think will improve my game. But I suppose as I follow Crossfield a lot I've had it drilled into me that after market shafts are not worth spending any money on until they will make a constant and noticeable improvement to your game over what you currently have. Which for me is many drops in handicap away. But then again Crossfield is a bit of a shaft sceptic.

And you try and tell the young people of today that ..... they won't believe you;)

Why?

Just learn to play the game properly and then get fancy shafts fitted.

Charming

Truth be told, experimenting with clubs and getting a feel for different things are all part of the learning experience and are all part of the package for me.

Its not 'only' about playing the game. I enjoy all the different facets that go with this hobby called golf.

I watched the MC video and i understand his point.

The aim of this "experiment" is to do nothing other than change the feel of my club, whilst not jumping right into a stiff driver.

I had an iron fitting session a few months ago and the pro told me in no uncertain terms that i need stiff shafts. The problem was that i refer the softer feel and "flick" in my irons, so i stayed with reg's and am improving no end.

The driver is slightly different however..

I am a fairly big hitter (well compared to my playing partners) and average around 260-70 (measured on GPS) and i have driven over 300 on a few occasions. I am also fairly accurate (on a good hit, snap hook is my bad one). It was more curiosity to see if there was anything to be gained by having a less whippy shaft.

And this is exactly the reason for trying this.

I can essentially have a stiff shaft with adapter and can easily roll back to my regular shaft if it does not feel right.

Nothing to lose except 50 squid or so.

Practice, practice, practice. Have a lesson on your driver and the basics

I had one at the range and found my setup was waaaaaaaaay out. I play an R11 tp stiff Matrix HD6 shaft and am knocking 260-270 of late but that's all down to being shown the correct setup and concentrating on a smooth swing. Don't get me wrong there are stray drives now and again but on the whole I'm a a lot happier.

I played an old track last week and one of the lads told me to take the shortcut over the trees on a 200yard dogleg left. Without hesitation I bombed it over which I would never have attempted a month ago
