I have been playing now for about 18 months and although very pleased with progress now 14 handicap i am embarassed to report that my understanding of many aspects of this game is limited to say the least. I am bsaed on the borders of Kent in the South East and am considering being fitted for clubs. Why would i? what is the benefit? What sort of money am i looking at etc. Your views would be most welcome.

Hi mate,

I'd get your knee sorted first! ;)

I've had a few new sets in my time, but Jon, my doubles pair, is still playing with a set of Wilson deep reds, and he's coming down as quickly as I am with my two new sets.

Custom fit is good, but equally, so are lessons. I guess it depends on what you've got already, what goals you're setting yourself and how quickly.

Have a chat with Frazer or James and see what they think. I asked Frazer about getting a new sand wegde and he said I was better having a bunker lesson... which saved me £60! :)

hi mate hope your ok i'm looking to get nine holes in and test the knee this weekend i will be using a buggy for a while but desperate to get swinging of the 2 who would recommend for lessons based on your great knowledge of my poor game!

If they fit you they fit you. It's like buying a nice new suit, would an off the peg one fit as well as a tailor made one (Excuse the Taylormade pun). Clubs off the rack are made as an average fit for an average built person (whatever that is) If you are tall/short, fat/thin, long/short arms, long/short legs, etc etc then rack clubs will not be the optim fit and you will have to make swing compensations to deliver the clubface squarely to the ball.

I would rather have a budget set of clubs fitted than a premium set that arn't. Well, I might make an allowance if they were MP 63,s

Also depends if you are planning any great changes to your swing. No point getting fitted for a set and say 2 degrees flat if you are then going to change to a more upright swing with lessons. Granted a forged set is easily adjusted but surly better to have it right from the offset

Unless your a really odd size/shape. I think it is a chicken and egg thing. Do you use off the shelve as you grove a swing? Or do you get custom fit and hope you dont change your swing. Is easy to say get custom fit, but is it always the right option? Maybe the best thing would be to get a few lessons and see if the pro thinks, you need custom or shelve clubs.
