I was playing with a friend that’s the Captain of another club and he asked me if I knew ****** ******.

Which I didn’t, it transpires this gentleman was a member of a club I was a former member and had recently won the open at my friends club. Here’s where it gets dodgy. He had entered with his mate and they had been drawn in different groups. Rang up and cancelled as he wanted to play with his mate… !

Anyway had then called again the night before the comp for any spaces, which there were and he and his mate played together after all. This chap is off scratch and won the scratch prize while his mate, who I believe is a high handicapper, won the handicap section..

It would also appear that they have won quite a few walk on opens playing together.

This could all be quite innocent, I like playing with my mates as well and i usually play well with them, but are comps are all drawn so i can't. This sets off alarm bells with most others this was discussed with, What would be your take on this?

And what would happen at your club under these circumstances

Sounds highly dubious but very hard to prove I guess, were they only a 2 ball or was there a 3rd member to the group? Not sure historically anything will change but going forward the local golf union should be told and all courses should be informed if organising opens I think. Sounds very much like no smoke without fire.

If its always just the 2 of them in walk ins then massively dubious but hard to prove as nobody will see whats going on.

I'm yet to play in any open comps need to get a few in before the end of the year, but i would always expect these to be purely drawn and never with mates to prevent any of the above.

This is exactly the reason that 3-balls are the way to play comps/tournaments.

Collusion between all 3 is almost unheard of.

Hard to prove, but even the possibility is a bit dodgy!

Sounds a bit dodge for sure.

Playing in Open " Over50+60's" and on first tee exchanged cards and handicaps ages etc for one guy to quip " well that's the prizes sorted then "

Indeed it was, two best grosses and and a best nett from 3 of us, so can happen ;)

sounds as if it would be huge coincidence to keep happening they both play well and win different prizes regular in different opens.
hard to prove and accuse though and maybe totally geniune but sounds as if alarm bells are ringing on the jungle drums......

Sounds like it could just be sour grapes to me?

Has there been any inclin from anybody that they cheated? Why would they? Just because I play with a mate wouldnt mean we would cheat, so I think it's a little harsh to assume that of everyone else either..

They probably just played better than everyone elese. Look at their records, there must be loads of comps that they have not won. Dangerous path to go down if you assume that 2 people are cheating because they are friends and want to play together I think..

I am impressed with their cheek but of course they might just be good. The fact it is being talked about means they may well be found out soon.

If it was a one off then let it go, if it's happening regularly (a few times per year) then I'd start asking questions or pointing fingers!

I've no connection to the club it happened at and don't know the guys from adam only what i was told my the captain of that club and a prev captain, I'm sure that i could just be they both had a good day. But the point was raised that they have won a few walk on opens in the past year.

If your not a member of the course I'd imagine it would be incredibly difficult to walk on to a new place and win, I got a dismal 27 points in my first attempt. On the flip side though if he plays off scratch then he must be a great player and you would think learnt what this game is all about along the way. I vote coincidence!
