Despite being the very lucky recipient of a new 909D2 recently courtesy of GM, I have been erratic with it, and found myself fighting a huge fade/slice, even tho I am still drawing my irons.
I even had a lesson last week to see if I could sort myself out, but swing changes are hard to implement as everyone will know, particularly after 20yrs playing.

So, playing tonight with a friend who has the old 905R with a ProForce V2 shaft in, and after watching him bomb the thing down the middle with a slight draw, I thought I'd give it a go......

No Slice....No fade, ......and mahoosive distance !! :D :D

14th. 290yds/Par4. Just off right edge of green.

16th. 469yds par4 Downwind admittedly. Perfect Draw,.....middle of fairway........320yds. 8 Iron to green. Easy 4.

18th. 379yds. Drawn drive leaving a 1/2 shot with a 54* Wedge in......2 putts....easy 4.

Right,.........anyone wanna buy a 909D2 ?

I am seriously worried about how this post goes against everything I believe about the benefits of custom fitting having read / learnt a lot about it, and against my now perceived necessity to go through this process! :O

Congratulations on fixing your driving Chris, but I'm hoping it is just your own mental block, and not a major flaw in the custom fitting process, which has lead to such different results!

I cant explain it, I really cant.

I absolutely love the 909, and sooooooo want to get on with it, but something just isnt happening with it at all for me.
Maybe something about the head shape that just doesnt sit with me when I swing, or maybe it is the shaft that just isnt working with my swing.

The 905 had a ProForce V2 Stiff shaft in, and my 909 has a Graphite Design one, Custom fitted so I had huge hopes it would be perfect.

But, to hit 2 of the longest drives I have ever hit on 2 of our trickiest holes, with a Club I hadnt used before, is perhaps something I just simply cant ignore.

I agree ignoring it would be silly, and if on another given day these results repeat themselves you would certainly be sensible to ditch the custom fit 909 for the older, stock driver. It just goes to show however that custom fitting does not necessarily guarantee results. I am certainly now wary of whether or not it is worth doing when I come to replace my driver, when before your post I would have laughed at suggestions of there being no need to bother. You would expect that the shaft in your new club would be correct and suited to your swing having had the fitting. Out of interest did you try the 909 with the V2 in it when at Brampton?

In order to prevent a radical change in my custom fitting ideology I am at this moment in time trying to think that it may have something to do with the shaft that Titleist believed to be most suitable not being 'pured' and as such does not fit you as well as the club you tried. I am clutching at straws here though to try and explain this. Maybe you are just a strange golfing anomaly ;) I will give it some more thought when I wake up and am not knackered. This does have me puzzled. One more question...did you hit the 909 at the fitting better than the 905 when you recently used it?

Certainly didnt try the 909 with the V2 shaft I'm sure, tried lots of others.
I was seemingly fading it slightly on the day, as I was with my own G5, and like you, I beleived completely in the CF process.

However, I've set my stall out to get down to Singles, perhaps as low as I think I'm ever gonna get at my age, (46), and I arent gonna mess about, I'm going to try the 905 again and see if the same happens, and if it does, then I'll swap, I simply cant ignore the results I saw tonight.

Cant explain it.......

This is my concern about custom fitting for mid to high handicapers (consistancy). It realy depends what your swinging like on the day of the custom fit. I had my irons custom fitted about 3 years ago at Callaway and I can distinctly remember I was having one of those "the swing feels a little aukward" days. So i'm not 100% sure that they saw my average swing.

Sounds like you had some great drives there...must fill you with confidence. Wonder what would have happened had you hit your own Driver straight away, with that different mind-set.

That's what's made me hold off on getting a full custom fit set. I have no consistency at all at the moment.

No. But do you want to buy a 905R with stiff Proforce shaft??? :D

I have changed to the 907 D2 with the stiff Diamana shaft (a lot lighter and a touch softer than the Proforce).

True. But you i think you should still get the clubs fitted to your build if nothing else, this will still help you rather than playing with unsuitable clubs. IMHO

Completely agree with this. I drove 250 miles before getting to my appointment at Mizuno Wrexham and I hit bad shot after bad shot including a few shanks (which I have never done!).

Therefore I dont feel that this was my normal swing and was not fitted correctly.

Bizarre... i'm in pretty much the same boat myself with the 909 D2. Admitedly i picked it up off the shelf, without trying it, but i'd had Titleists before and just thought it would be fine.

I've really persevered with it and i so want to get on with it, but i just can'. I've been losing around 30-40 yards with it. have gone back to my old driver and hitting it lovely, so i too am looking to get rid of a 909 D2 - 9.5 degree.

At least i know i'm not alone. (by the way, when i rang a custom fitting place recently they said the number of people they've had in who can't hit the 909 was in the tens).

Cant say I've lost distance, just shape, as I cant stop cutting it, which sometimes is a huuuuge slice.

Picked up a friends 905R for the 1st time on Mon nt and hit 2 of the longest drives I have EVER hit, both with a perfect draw, and both 300yds+.

Go figure.

Thx Slugger, have already managed to find exactly the same club that I tried recently to great effect....

905R with a ProForce V2 76g shaft

Looking forward to it arriving :D
