'I can break par with 50 year old clubs....no problem'

Try and get a club golfer to break handicap with those clubs. Modern technology, especially in shafts and cavity weighting HAS made the game easier for the average player. I have played off the shelf and had C/F and there are arguments for both options but I am certain the modern club would go further and straighter, certainly in my hands

Really surprised the carry distance of his irons.

I know they mention the was a head wind, but 122 yards for a 9 iron, from a tour pro.

Seems very short

So basically speaking if the old clubs were delofted and lengthened the overall distance would be less than 10 yards ... Therefore the ball is to blame. For sure the clubs have helped with their development, but if your a pure striker the help is minimal.
The next point is the driver, as I have always thought people cannot miss with a modern one and swing out of control or too aggressively ... Which is why the handicap hasn't improved significantly, because people just swish away with no control. Be less aggressive hit more fairways score better, not "I have SS of 110+ mph and hit the ball x miles" ( usually into the rubbish)

It's obviously not just the Press that apply their own slant on a story to come up with the conclusion they want! Unless you are a 'journalist' of course!
