Imagine you are Monty - yes I know it takes some doing but go with me on this one.

Its D-Day and you've got to make your Ryder Cup picks.
There is one player who really should have qualified but hasn't.

Question:-

Today - would you give Sergio Garcia a wildcard if he hasn't qualified?

Not interested in any other picks just El Nino..

Would you? Wouldn't you?

On current form I'd say there's possibly a reason to not pick him. He's been distinctly average all year and not done much, he's dropped down the rankings - ok he's still 9 but going down. His putting is still a mess most of the time too.

Despite his current form, i think he is a classic Ryder cup player as it seems to bring the best out of him.

Having just had flu and watched the DVDs of the last 5 outings in the last 4 days he is always one to watch and motivate others in a way that Monty can't IMHO

I would always have Garcia on a wild card shortlist given his Ryder Cup pedegree. However, the last Cup in Valhalla showed no matter how much 'passion' he has, if the quality is not there the cracks will appear.

Remember, he asked not to play (previously unthinkable)on the morning of Day 2 and then got thoroughly whooped by Anthony Kim in the first singles game when Europe needed a strong start - hardly an inspiring performance.

I would go for in-form players everytime as, sprinkled with experience, rookies can be equally as inspired.

definately yes he is a ryder cup cert, his desire 2 spank the yanks is infectious,he plays with a smile and you can see he just loves kicking there ass,as 4 monty probably the most miserable person ever, pure and simple a big baby, how can anybody who has his lifestyle be that unhappy, unbelievable

I would have him in the team. Hes a top class golfer and has a good amount of experience in the Ryder Cup, but on current form its a hard choice but i would favour in the yes camp on this one.

I disagree. Passion and desire are all very good and I'd definitely have him in the locker room where those qualities are a must but if his form wasn't up to the job then I'd be looking to pick the form horses.

Much as i dislike Garcia he would be very hard to ignore for the Ryder Cup.Unless he was going through a dire time with his form i think he would have to be a certainty to be in the team.

He would be the 1st on my pick list, the best tee to green golfer in Europe and it is just a shame he has been putting like me for a while, that said he still produces rounds of 64/65 fairly regular and will no doubt pull one out this week.Far far to classy to be left out....put it this way who could offer what he can??Nobody that wouldn't already be in the team.

Definate no if it was now. We've got too many hungry, young, fearless and in form players to take him along.

For those that say he plays with a smile on his face - tell me how long that smile lasted when he was getting beat at Valhalla?

Answer: Approx 410yds (or the length of the 1st hole) Dead easy to be grinning when you're winning.

Based on current form, no.
He is an experienced player and could help the RC team by being there though. Wild card him??? Not on his current form.

As SG nears 30 the weight of under-achievement is starting to crush him imo.
He has a good overall RC record but only in doubles, he gets cuffed in the singles regularly which is when the heat is really on and it's important to win points.
I wouldn't think it was a help or a hindrance particularly to have him there. Very good golfer but suspect on short putts and not a talisman anymore.

He could be like many good players and really find form into his 30's, he seems immature in many ways - needs to settle down a bit and find a short-putting coach who can really help him.

Being Monty and knowing the surge in confidence playing in the Ryder Cup gives a player I would also say OH YES.

Sergio is an animal in the RC and although he flowndered againd Kristina Kim ... eh ... I mean Anthony Kim or was it .. ah well, that was a one off in my opinion.

One of the reasons Garcia got tonked by Kim was that this was the match the media, the americans, and the public wanted to see, and Faldo colluded with the yanks to get this pairing together and out first. If Garcia had played anyone else, further down the order, he may have had less pressure on him, and won his point. To me it still comes down to poor captaincy from Faldo. Someone a bit more stable, and dare I say it, boring should have played Kim. Some one who doesn't get wound up. Like Paddy (another one who didn't deliver).

Yes, I would pick Garcia for my RC team.

don't see the argument Murph. SG is/was perhaps the senior RC player we had. Who else do you send out first - a minnow?

right now, I'd gamble and take some fresh blood, improve his results - no contest.

It was obvious the yanks would send Kim out first, and that due to Garcias temperament, he would get under his skin. I would have put Paddy out first. His plodding slow play and natural calm and measuredness would have had the opposite effect and it may have been Kim who cracked. The Kim / Garcia thing played straight into the yanks hands.

Wasn't just the Kim loss, he got hammered by Cink at the K-Club too. :p
