Be interested to hear the thoughts if you were a member of this hypothetical golf club.

HGC is a well established members club

The greenkeepers do not work weekends - one of them comes in for a couple of hours to (sometimes) cut the greens and, on comps days move the pins. They get paid overtime rate for this!!!

The course is very, very quick draining.

If the greenkeeper classes the course unfit @ 8am, it remains so until the following morning regardless of whether it becomes playable an hour later.

Is this standard practice at other courses? As it has totally baffled me

Happens at a few courses around here - Leighton Buzzard is one and the members aren't impressed by it

Would HGC be where you are a member at by some chance:) Yes does seem odd, club must be losing some revenue. If I were the club manager it certainly would not be something I would put up with

I was a greenkeeper at a club just like this, head greenkeeper declared the course closed at 7am on a saturday, and it stayed that way till 7am the next day, didn't come back in through the day even though he lived less than a mile from the course and got paid overtime at weekends. Ridiculous if you ask me.

I just cannot get my head round this. What time do the greenstaff start? The course must lose a fortune in green fees. I take it this happens more than once per season

Me neither!!

HGC would have been one of the only clubs in the area that was open - conservatively - 10 green fees @ £25 + 10 more members coming out to play...........probably £400 passed up on for 1 day.

Would the hypothetical situation be made any worse if the members then received an email telling them that the club really needs their support?

Was the course later suitable for play? Should be somebody else who can declare the course open after the greenstaff have gone home

That happens at mine. The only difference is ours is not very very quick to drain like HGC.

That also used to happen at an old Club except....

Pins were often not changed from Friday until Monday

Greens may not be cut on at least 1 of the weekend days

Course was very very slow to drain! (Clay based).

HHGK didn't take kindly to requests for improved service!

Very odd way to run a business if you ask me. Ours is the exact opposite it never shuts. 6ft of snow down if you want to play no problem, water everywhere not to worry away you go. It would appear there is no happy medium

we have the same policy, we never close unless it's thick fog or thunder/lightening, We may only have 12 holes open but it still gets ya some fresh air.

Must ask when I'm next at the club what our criteria is, assuming it's because the surrounds are so boggy so therefore greens have to be too wet even though you can't see any water on them and they're protecting them, but then why can't we play on temps so must be other reasons, will make some enquiries.
Baffled as why HGC was shut .

Thick fog not a problem at our place. Thunder/Lightening not sure on that as I have never been there when it has occurred.
I had the brown trouser moment a week last Saturday, stood on the 18th then bang, masses of lightening, thunder oh and the monsoon, said my goodbyes to my wife and kids then swung with hope...... Pretty scary, storm was on top of us. Golf club did sound the air horn to stop play.

Yes I cannot imagine it is a pleasant experience!! Never been in that position fortunately. Got some nice Adams gear in the bag mate. I love their Hybrids best on the market by a distance. The irons and woods are very nice as well. A very underrated brand.
