So everywhere I read I keep getting told hybrids are the way forward for someone of my ability, all over youtube I'm told this, all over magazines I'm told this.
But I'm really struggling what to pop in the bag between 5 iron and 3 wood. Currently got a driving iron which is ok, not great out the rough mind.
So do I put a hybrid in? 2 hybrids? what lofts or do I pop a 5 wood in? really confused by the whole thing.
And whats the gap between a 3 and 4 hybrid in terms of yards if its only 3 degrees separation and 1/2 length?
I feel a huge range session coming on

Only real way to know is to go and hit some with a trackman etc and look at the numbers.

I found I hit a 5h and 4h within 8 yards of each other but also found I hit a 2h better than a 5w hence my bag in the sig below. Would never of landed on this without hitting them and getting advice.

Have fun!

If you can find a good 5 wood then 5w/4h/5i would be nice.

I used to go 3w/4h/4i but since the winter started dropped to Dr/2h/4h/5i and quite enjoying it

If you can only fit in one club then a hybrid would be perfect: either 4H or 3H. But try them out, preferably get it fitted, because there are so many varieties of hybrids out there. Some are awesome but others are so bad it can put you off hybrids for life. I have a 5W and 4H between my 5I and 3W. However lots of players imitate the pros and don't carry a 5W, which is a shame because it's such a reliable club for the amateur.

This, in part, was one of the reasons I kept the top end of my bag simple.

1 Driver .....

1 Fairway

1 hybrid

The only gap I had was between my 3 iron and 4 wood.

Trialled a few clubs and the one that was gave the most consistent gap was a 19° hybrid.

Hit a few and see what gives the best results.

I've fiddled about with hybrids for years, but never found one that I felt I could rely on.

A couple of months ago I plucked a callaway 7 wood from the 2nd hand bin in our pro shop.

It has been a revelation. I get a much higher ball flight than a hybrid that would go the same distance (I hit it about 190) and seem to make a more reliable contact. It's actually the top end of my bag, as although a 5 wood might theoretically be longer, the easier strike and better flight means that the 7 pretty much gets the same distance but is more reliable.

One thing to think about might be the type of course you play on - I play on parkland with very firm greens in the summer. Being able to come down softly is important. If you played links, you might want to hit a similar distance but keep the ball down out of the wind and use the run-out to your advantage. I think that higher lofted fairways tend to have a higher flight than hybrids.

To my eternal shame, I am now considering a 9 wood (luckily none on ebay at the moment except in pink....)

Its all all down to personal taste. Just a case of finding something that's goes the distance you want, numbers or loft on the bottom of the club is irrelevant. I carry a 19 degree hybrid and 18 degree flu hi. The hybrid goes 10 yards further and the flu hi fills the gap between this and my 4 iron which I have had tweaked a touch stronger.

As I say, doesn't matter if its a hybrid, lofted wood or utility iron, find something you are comfortable hitting and goes the yardage you are looking for.

I have a 3 hybrid and 4 hybrid. 18 and 21 degree. I only use the 4 hybrid in the winter though as I take my 4 iron out. I find I have a perfect gapping throughout the bag with this setup. Defiantly worth a pop getting a hybrid and getting used to it as I love my 3 hybrid for par 5s and the 4 hybrid for loooong par 3s.

My Current Benross is one of the best I've hit in all the years of trying hybrids (and I've tried every single make!).
I was fitted for the 20 degree and was so impressed, I added the 17 degree as well.
Thoroughly recommend...

Is it the RIP or the HOT you have Rick?

I'm toying with the idea of 2 hybrids as I'm not really a fw kind of guy off the deck, but I'd want at least 4 degrees difference, maybe 2 different manufacturers, thinking 23/19.

I carry a 4H (24'), 3H (21') I also have a 5W which goes about the same distance as the 3H but with alower ball flight. I usually carry both but the 5W is currently taking a break as I am trying to decide on the best wedge combination for Blackmoor and so am carrying one more than usual.

I have at the top end

Driver at 14 degree
HL3 Wood at 17 Degree
3H at 19 Degree
MPH 4 iron

Also have a 4H at 22 degree and a MPH3 Iron that I swap in and out with the 4 iron or even a wedge

fwiw I have a driver, SLDRmini, RBZtourTP 3w, normal 3w, 5w, 3h,4h,3i.4i and select my bag for the course and conditions from those - usually 4 of them but 5 at this time of year. Yesterday it was the Driver, mini, 5w, 4h, 4i but in the summer it's more commonly the mini, 5w and 3h, 4h

Tried all sorts of hybrids/rescue whatever over the years and always ended up back with a trusty 5 wood. It's versatile, I can hit it over 200 or 180 by choking down etc. If I'm more than 200 from the green then I've usually hit a bad drive and will be taking my medicine (making sure I don't compound the error). Depends on the course though I suppose, we only have two par 5's. It's a personal thing, I just don't like the look or feel of them and the only one I've ever hit consistently well only went 175 so was pointless. Still, they've been great for the manufacturers though.....best invention since soft spikes :D . By all means go for it, but if you really want to improve your game you should be looking at the other end of your bag. That will help you still score when you don't hit the green from 180/200 yards which (with or without a hybrid) will be about 90%+ of the time.
