Hybrids, a busted flush?

Part of the problem is that retailers don't have the same choice

If I want a mens club with a 7 wood 22 degree of loft for example, AG (to pick one retailer) has 1 fairway wood, a clearance benross) while they have 17 hybrids to choose from across 10 different manufactures

To hit it you have to buy it, to buy it they have to sell it

and anyway a hybrid is easier to hit ;)

I don't understand the problem.

Personally I find my hybrids very easy to hit, get good distance, and usually play them from a number of different situations - very versatile. Never had a wood less less than 3 (4,5,7), never seen the need to. Choosing between a 4 hybrid or 4 wood will be different for all, much like choosing which golf shirt you want to wear, whichever you feel comfortable with.

Is there a decent player out there who can't hit a 3,4,5 or 7 wood and has to play one of these?

i don't get it....

What's the difference between a wood and a hybrid? Often they look very similar anyway.
I don't think they will be disappearing any time soon, as most golfers carry at least one, and the shops are full of them, so they obviously sell well.

Hybrids are brilliant and versatile, off a tee, the fairway or sometimes out of the rough my Callaway X3 hot 3 hybrids going nowhere soon!

not sure what the problem is, i find hybrids very easy to hit so easy its almost like cheating.

Best player i know is off +4 and he has two

Why do you need to?

If the club - be it 7 wood or Hybrid - works well for the player, then who cares?

Anybody seen a 6 wood btw? I've seen, and hit, 11, 13 and 15 ones!

There are also quote a few players who don't get on with hybrids. A couple of mates (off 6 and 8) use 7 woods in preference, but admit they are slightly less versatile. One is even starting to use a G20 hybrid - known as 'the fugly club'!

Basically use what works best! Seems to work for the Pros!

I still have an MD superstrong 11 wood (its a few years old but still works very well when it gets out to the range)

Its not as versatile as a 27* hybrid though

They have completely different design aspects - a hybrid has more in common with an iron than a wood, but there are differences there too that create different launch angles and spin rates.
The hybrid is also a wide ranging category that encompasses everything from a ping rapture iron to an RBZ one, FlHi to Adams.

I've lately swapped out my hybrids and put a 4 iron and 7 wood in the bag instead. Just because I lost confidence in the hybrids but when I was hitting them well they were great clubs. Higher ball flight than the 4i and 7w which can be useful.

I expect they'll be back in the back sooner or later....

A few years ago the 7W became 'outdated' and the hybrids appeared in swarms. The early hybrids were awful, like bricks on a stick, and I hated them. Modern ones are much better and more versatile than the trusty 7W, and provide an alternative to the 4I, 3I and 2I. However a really good iron player is unlikely to have one in their bag because they can hit those long irons. The choice is yours.

Hybrids are great. I've one I can carry 190 and stop and another I'm currently hitting ~235 nice and straight in summer conditions. No way I could play either of those shots consistently with an iron.

We all like different clubs however and it's simply preference for a tool to get the job done, ultimately.

I can't hit my hybrid at all. I have caught it once where it wasn't a duff, top, toe etc.

I carry it & will still pull it out thinking it will come good for me, but end up telling the club it's useless & that's why it stays in the bag.**

I prefer to take my 5 wood or an iron anytime.

**Yes I talk to my clubs. Like people talk to plants or their pets, I congratulate my clubs for good shots & berate them when they mis-behave....:o

remove every club above a 6 iron from the bag, except the hybrid...now go out and play a full round, or even 2.

don't just talk to it - make friends! give it opportunities to shine rather than just taking it out when no other club will do the job :(

ps this works for most naughty clubs longer than a 6 iron; but it will not work when the other clubs are in the bag and watching - they have to be left in the car/home/locker etc

I have taken the hybrid for a romantic 1 on 1 to the range a few times & even after working it for 50 balls a time she doesn't want to know.

It's like she knows that she is 2nd favourite. She just doesn't want to know.

Hybrids have a slightly shorter shaft and a heavier head than woods, which makes them easier than woods to use, and better at getting out of light rough. Hence the alternative name of Rescue clubs. I love mine. :)

ah, but on the range you are trying to establish what you can do with the club....if it's all you have on the course for real life situations, hole after hole, you will eventually find out what it can do for you :)
