On Saturday I was early for my tee time so had a wander round the pro shop while I waited on my playing partner. Sat in the corner was an i25 hybrid which caught my eye, it was fitted with an upgrade to the standard PWR shaft in the form of a Harrison Zephyr 60g little number. It looked the business and having just had a wee unexpected bonus at work and clearly too much time on my hands, did I not just go and buy it.
Well, that was the start of the love affair... and the abrupt end of it. Whilst it looked great in the shop, all nice and shiny outside in real life I just didnt like it. It doesnt sit right to my eye and it looks a bit clumsier than my JPX EZ that I thought it would replace.
I didnt seem to hit it as far, albeit its only hit 4 balls, I decided to try and persevere and not just take it back (although knowing our pro he would just laugh at me) but 4 days later and having looked at it again and again trying to find a way to like it, not even love it just like it, I find I can't.
It makes me wonder what people find good abour Ping gear as it all seems to look chunky and ungainly for the most part. This is one that I will just need to chalk up to experience.

Egad! That was a daft thing to do! (and I won't mention very un-Scottish - oops )!

Surely a few hits with the head taped up would have been in order first!

Ping stuff certainly has its fans though. Not one for my Ping-fan mate -he just doesn't get on with hybrids!

Yeah, lots of sensible things I could have done but instead I got myself swept up in the moment.
I tried really hard tonight to try and find a positive to say about it, all I could muster was "shaft is cracking" but thats it. And it is a great shaft, first time of using a Harrison.

Won't get too many more opportunities - they've gone out of business! But they had a great reputation! Only one I ever tried was a few hits of a bright pink 'Striper' that was in a 650cc!!! Integra just before the size restriction can in. It went a humungous distance!

Hey Greig, I'm persevering with a hybrid impulse buy of my own (RBZ stage 2)

Stupidly thought it would actually perform as a 5 hybrid given that's whats written on it and it has 25 degree loft but it turns out its almost as far as my 22 Cobra 4-hybrid (inc having the same shaft length) and its harder to hit!

Looks nice enough so maybe I'll just mount it on the wall!

Begs the question to the OP, if you didn't like the look of it, why did you buy it?

As explained in the OP, inside the shop it looked ok, dare I say it, good. Once out in the real world it wasn't the case.
The problem with impulse buys is that they are, well, impulses, not necessarily rational or indeed, as in this case, sensible...

While I understand that having clubs that look nice is a bonus, surely it's down the bottom of the list in terms of importance. I would happily use the most disgustingly ugly equipment on the planet if it meant that I played better. I happen to have G10 irons and agree they look a bit chunky, but can guarantee I would perform a lot worse with an elegant set of blades.

Confidence plays a huge part in golf, being confident in your equipment, for me, plays a part in how well I play. As it does for many people. Looking down on a club that doesnt inspire me with confidence inversely affects me. Your clubs work for you but having had a hit with G25 irons when they came out I did not fare too well.

So you use Super GUI hybrid/woods/driver and wonder why a players club doesn't suit. Yeah, its clearly the club thats broken….

High horse loaded up a bit there is it not? Did I say the club was broken...? No, I believe I said I made a mistake and I don't like it. I am sure it is great but ye know what... some folks like stuff and some folks don't.
Uh oh, somebody got a frowny face....

And I believe the MP650 range is a top top super GUI club

At least most people took the thread in the manner intended, or read it didnt then look at the list of equipment and then judge...

All i'd say it's the chief not the arrows.. but you seem to think it's the club. "It makes me wonder what people find good about Ping gear as it all seems to look chunky and ungainly for the most part."

Might be a heavier head Alex as overall it doesnt seem to be much lighter (or at least feel it - but then at my level I probably wouldnt notice)

Ye no right or wrong on that one, just a comment. I would expect you for sure would notice 20 or 30 grams more of shaft weight no matter your level though.

Shame you did not even get a few hours of new shiny fun!

How it looks is nothing to do with how it performs. The only thing 'I seem to think is the club' is that its butt ugly. I said it didnt go as well as my other hybrid and I realise why (your super GI comment, rather than the more computer related GUI). What I said was I tried to like it (looks) and don't - simple as that.
Chief and arrows plays no part as my disparaging of the club was not it's performance.
I have owned many a 'players' club (whatever that is) down the years and even some of them were butt ugly and moved on as I didn't like them.
The comment about PING's looks was just that, people uae them and like them even though MY opinion is that they are clunky and ungainly. I have what you could describe as GI irons in the JPX EZ Forged but the heads are compact and they don't look clunky. Neither do the JPX hybrids with a more IMO sleek look.
None of that probably makes sense to a players player bit to me its fundemental to how I decide (or not) to use equipment.
