Clearly it is an awful time out there at the moment. Every year hurricanes hit this part of the world, this year seems to be worse than others. I have not been out there, don't know anyone who has been so I would be interested to hear from anyone who has knowledge.

Is insurance just not viable? Is the fact that hurricane season happens every year make premiums unaffordable for most?

Can you ever hurricane proof these islands or do you just have to accept that you build your house cheaply as it will inevitably be destroyed at some point?

It all seems a bit grim and the thought that this happens every year makes it a bit like Beowulf.

makes me wonder whether they and the east coast americans have ever read the three little pigs story, surely houses built of brick and mortar would stand a better chance.

The BBC had a bit of information on why the hurricanes are significantly stronger this year:

"Sea surface temperatures are higher than average, wind shear - which is the change in speed and direction of winds from surface level to high in the atmosphere - is low, and there has not been any major input of dry, dusty air from the Sahara which can impact the development of these storms."

Seems that everything has just came together at the wrong time.
