I know the ins & outs of CSS changing and the effect on weather on scores etc ..so dont delve too much into "on any given day" please .

im just wondering in general if in most "normal" comps you shot 36 pts , without seeing the results would you EXPECT

(A) a handicap cut

(B) Buffer every time

(C) .1 Back

Thanks

Bill

Depends. If you or I hit 36 but the rest of the field only hit 26 then expect a cut.

Generally though I'd say you've hit buffer.

If I want a cut at my track, I have to shoot 38 points as CSS usually goes down 1.

If I shot 36 points in a comp (... Off 14) I'd just be in buffer.

Buffer for me, or potentially a .2 cut (knowing me, I threw a 6 or 7 in there somewhere). Very rarely do you find the whole field playing well enough to push the css out 2 shots + to get .1 back.

Off track a tad - but if your CSS usually goes down, doesn't that imply that the SSS is too high..?
Surely on an average day CSS should mirror SSS....?

Anyway, 36 points would be buffer for me, very rarely a cut and often a win....

Yes Ian. Our SSS is 1 under.

At our place (B), very occasionally (A), never (C)

As SSS at my place is -1, I work on the principal that I normally have to shoot 37 points to play to my handicap:

I normally assume:
35 = 0.1 back
36 = buffer
37 = level
38 = 0.1 cut

Yes Ian. Our SSS is 1 under.

But if SSS is -1 and usually CSS is -2 then SSS is 1 too high innit...?
For CSS to come down it means a lot of people are making buffer or better every time

But then what do I know (or care) about CSS.....:rofl::rofl:

this highlights where SSS has a bearing on things, so have others before in this thread.
if the OP SSS is = Par then would expect 36 to buffer more times than not maybe an occasional tiny cut but never 0.1 back. If sss is less than par as above and if sss is more than par the 35 points is level so 36 would expect a cut.

Dont confuse me :confused:

CSS is usually 1 under. SSS is 1 under.

To be honest, I don't care anymore. I just look at the results board and see how I've done :mad:

The reason im asking is our AGM is coming up , you nearly always have to shoot 39 pts in a stableford comp to get a cut in our place

Personaly i think the REAL reason the CSS is 38 so often is caused mainly by the non return of score cards , because low scores are not being returned (for what ever reason) the computer is being fooled into thinking the course is playing easier therefore pushing up the css .. I intend to bring up the issue of NON RETURNS at the AGM and ask the committe to act on it ..

It could well be the course is actually that easy and 7 handicappers should need to play to 4 over to get cut every week , but i think all cards need to be returned either way ..

I await my bashing with interest :D be kind

NRs are counted as missed buffers so unless you have a lot of handicap protectors at your place who aren't returning good scores or you have a lot of people who think once you NR on a hole you can't still hit the buffer or get cut, then the NRs aren't making a blind bit of difference

EDIT: Your committee should be encouraging all players to return their scorecards, but whether it will change CSS is unlikely

Buffer everytime now I'm cat 2 did get a couple of 0.1's when I was cat 1 with (eq)36 points as the CSS had dropped to 2 under - so far never seen in get to 3 under!
