Just heard the sad news that former Everton great Howard Kendall has passed away.

Probably best remebered for managing the superb Everton team of the 80's with Andy Gray, Peter Reid, Southhall, Sharp, the two Steven's etc.

Im sure they will give him a good send off today when they give Man U a hiding. RIP

Was trying to remember that team the other day. Southall, Gary Stevens, Mountfield and Ratcliffe at the back, Sheedy, Reid, Trevor Steven in midfield, and Gray and Sharp up front. Who was the other full back and midfielder ? There was also a shaggy haired small striker that played quite a few games, came from Stoke I think.

RIP Howard Kendall

John Bailey and Pat Van Den Hauwe played at the back, Paul Bracewell in Midfield

Bracewell in midfield was the one, and Van Den Hauwe at the back. Cheers Paul.
Got confused with the Stoke connection as we bought him from Sunderland, forgot he started his career at Stoke.

Good little player Adrian Heath, but seemed to spend a lot of time as a sub. The four in midfield played brilliantly together. Paul Bracewell was a very under rated played. Peter Reid must have had one of his longest runs without injury playing for Everton.

It was dificult for Heath as him and Sharp had a great partnership going before Heath got injured and Gray took his chance, the midfield was probably as good I've ever seen as a complete midfield, not the greatest players as individuals (except to Everton fans) but as a foursome probably as good as any midfield on their day. Kendall got the blend perfect.

When that team were in their pomp, they just steamrollered teams, but also had good little partnerships everywhere, as well as flair from Trevor Steven. No real superstars, but a great team, nonetheless.

A bit like Baines and Pienaar, the whole is better than the individuals.

Steven and Stevens worked very well together. Gray and Sharp were a nightmare for any centrehalves from a physical point of view, as were Reid and Bracewell in the middle. Heath still contributed a lot in certain games and from the subs bench. Mountfield and ratcliffe were also a good partnership and werent the tallest, but ratcliffe was fast and Mountfield scored loads of goals from cebtre half (double figures, I think). For 3 seasons us and them were on a par with each other.

Sad day for Everton and for football.

A lot of the players in that Everton team had been written off, or had not done that well for previous teams, but Kendall got the best out of them. Always seemed like a decent guy as well, true gentleman. Sad news.

Got a fantastic 1 mins applause from 53,000 city and Bournemouth fans today.

The very least he deserved RIP

Great to hear.

The minutes applause at Goodison today was spine-tingling. One of the rare occasions whereby the ref let a minute be an actual minute. Quite an emotional tribute and there were tears in the eyes of many.

And, to mention, the United fans were fantastic also, clapped as furiously as the home fans for the duration. Their away support is renowned for being the worst and most troublesome in the league but top marks to them for the respect shown today. They too were superb.

RIP.

Glad to be able to say that although it is now nearly 40 years since he left St Andrews the club put on a tribute on the "big screen" and all the fans of both the Blues and QPR marked his passing with a very warm minute's applause.

It may be my old memory playing tricks but in 3 1/2 years at the club I don't think he ever made a negative pass. If only we had signed him and kept Big Bob Latchford.

He gave me some great memories from my childhood.
Funny really. as a Man Utd fan, as an adult I wouldn't be too bothered about an Everton player, but as a kid I idolised them all. Must be something to do with the cynicism of growing up.
The 60's team he played in was outstanding in an era when there were a lot of fantastic players around and the 80's team he managed were amazing. I remember them stuffing us 5-0 at Old Trafford. As we left the ground there were a couple of Evertonian girls chanting "one two, one two three, one two three four, five nil". Two burly coppers leaped into the crowd and literally picked them up of their feet and threw them into the back of a police van, probably for their own safety. They were still singing when the van doors had closed :D
A great player, a great manager, a great ambassador for football. RIP Howard Kendall.
