Approach shot over water and you overshoot the green.
On finding your ball it resembles something like this!

You have 3-4 yds to the green which slopes severely away from you back to the water
and the pin is only 5ft on

similar to this but with the pin nearer you

How do you proceed ?

Linear method, grip tightly (as advocated for this type of shot) aim right of the flag as the club will close and easy to pull it left. Try not to get too cute or too clever, get it out, two putt and get out of there

60*, open the face, aim left, thrash through underneath and across it. Hope for the best. You'll either look like a magician as it goes 20ft in the air and lands softly on the green, or a complete plumb when you knife it like an express train into the water....Good luck.

Don't aim for the pin if there is water beyond. If you do, you will probably leave the ball where it is.

Also, however put the pin 5 feet from the edge of the green needs a good talking to! R&A guidance is a minimum of 4 paces!

Only one option then for me. Drop and try again :whistle:

I might try and get the putter on it. Or depending on the grass, declare it unplayable and take a drop...

Aim right of the water and accept getting down in 3 further shots.
Having taken the pressure of the shot I would expect to perform it well and may well have a 20ft putt for down in 2; but that would not be the objective.

The above assumes I don't have to get down in 2 for a stableford point or half - if I do then it's the 60, not opened up!, slow smooth and slightly fat :)

not real sure if this is how do you play the optimum shot q with the scenario shown
or a is just to get answers across the board

folks have to be brutally honest with themselves about the level of their skill set to play an option that doesn't end up in a penalty shot situation so turn a bogey or double into a quadruple
so many in that instance would be better to play to the direction of the fairway, stays on the green a bonus, or still on dry land with a straight forwards chip from the fairway against fishing then dropping under penalty

nothing much to be gained by declaring an unplayable - rough around pretty similar that's what you are still going to be in with probably pretty much the same lie so no point - can't hole out a drop play safe if necessary could hole the next

optimum shot & my take - aim 6 feet right of pin slope going to bend it closer to the pin

technique sand wedge as you need bounce & club head weight - or lob wedge (lob would for most folks have less bounce so you need real good skill set)

why those as a club choice - you need loft as you want the 'energy' created to be directed 'up' not forwards - square lined up PW going to have too much forwards directed energy not enough up

need to lay open SW/LW to around 40/45º then take the hand hold on the already open club but hands down the handle so around 11/2" to the steel as you need speed but not distance shorten the club down by choking down

stance open 25/30º ball position around one ball forwards of center - open stance plus ball position plus 45º open face is directing energy in a swipe across ball/target line most of the energy to ball is going up - aim point only around 1" behind the ball so grass but try to take more you won't get the speed under the ball as the grass will 'hold' the clubhead

stance little ways nearer to the ball/target line to steepen the plane, weight on lead side stays on lead side through the motion head rock still sternum over front of ball hands/handle above ball so shaft nearly vertical (no real forwards lean) little extra knee flex keep it through shot maintain vertical height

this is one time you need to take the club back by wrist hinge so handle doesn't move backwards beyond the trail thigh as such
more of a turn chest back with the immediate wrist set, maintain the loft, clubhead travels in a 'V' shape with speed feeling of it popping under the ball with speed lead wrist extends trail palm moves upwards
practice swing would be a 'thud' of the 'bounce' on the grass - bit like the thud of the 'bounce' through sand

important hips & body turn through the shot - feeling that the hands hands get to just above hip height in the takeback

ball will pop up & out high come down softer roll out slope taking it towards the hole anywhere from 10' in a good result

but as with any shot it's a situation & a technique you gotta practice to get good at to have confidence to execute
majority of folks never really do practice this kinda stuff & that's a major difference through the index cats

Play it like a bunker splash shot, aim right of the pin.
You've got to be thinking of getting down in 3 maximum.

Absolutely no chance id be accepting taking 3. I'd be trying to get up and down.

Ive practiced these kind of shots and how to play it soft landing. Worst case scenario I kind of chunk it out. Hopefully not into the water. Even if its a second chip from either end of the green I will then try to get it up and down.

this is super effective. Takes some practice to learn and trust. It isn't all that difficult. I'd take 3, but wouldn't accept 3 straight away in this position.

You'll note I said "getting down in 3 MAXIMUM". I see so many club players waste so many shots around the greens, and there are so many things that can go wrong with this shot. He could chunk it and leave another tough downhill chip, thin it into the water.....
Sometimes we have to accept the situation and play smart (aka taking the medicine) , so although we are still trying to get up and down, we still need to choose the option that is unlikely to result in disaster.

If the grass is running away from me... Flop. If the grass is running into me... Panic!

3-4 yards is quite a way for a little chip and kill it in the fringe but that might be my option if the grain was into. 52 or 56.
