How risk averse are they? that would be the deciding factor for me.
There is a decent runner at Kempton tomorrow, 4/1 if you fancy it! or there are premium bonds... Lots of other options though in between the two, all down to risk, length of time they want the money tied up for etc etc..
Personally, I would be investing in shares.

If I had the space, a classic car would probably give a return at least as good as most of the more conventional investments.

:thup: Lot of options for longer term investment. If you are talking short term, no risk, look at Cash ISA's, Premium Bonds, National Savings etc.
For longer term investments with risk you should get professional advice, and look to invest through Stock and Shares ISA's. ISA's have some tax advantages, such as income tax, capital gains tax etc depending on the type of investment.
Couldn't you build them a nice shed for the garden with £10,000 James ?

Premium Bonds have outperformed cash ISA's for me in the last 10 years.

Lloyds could be worth a punt if you are prepared to wait it out. 75p at the mo and should start paying dividends some time soon. The government will be looking to get rid of their stake too.
