(Sorry for the useless title but couldn't think of anything better :o)

So, how would you feel about a junior girl with no handicap being allowed to play in a comp, off of 54?

It's only a fun Christmas comp (scramble), but there's an entry fee so presumably prizes on offer.

Obviously there's the first point about them not having a handicap, then playing off 54 instead of the highest handicap for women of 36, then waiving the rule about having to have played in 3 qualifiers in the last 12 months to be eligible for prizes?

It's Christmas, who cares, let her have fun?

....................... or .......................

Rules are rules, it isn't fair on everyone else?

She'll be OK. Nice for her to play and to feel 'part of'. In a golf club - especially when new or a junior - it's easy to feel 'apart from' when you should feel 'part of'

A - let her play, hopefully she'll enjoy herself (maybe even win) and we'll have one more to add to the, sadly thin on the ground, young female golfing population.

I think 54 is silly. I'd let them play and either have a max of 36 or play off 54 but your team can't win. The moment prizes are involved you can't let things become too daft. It is not fair on the other people paying into the competition. I don't have a problem with them playing without an official h/cap because it is a fun comp so loosen the rules but don't throw them completely out of the window. Yes, I am picking and choosing.

Usually in a scramble there is a team handicap calculated and having someone off 54 might bump that up considerably. Is she going to be playing along with her off-scratch dad and his two scratch pals!

Often scrambles have a maximum handicap per team. If that's the case then no probs at all but could see why it could cause a problem if her team get lots of extra shots (and win)!

To change it slightly, as people have no big vested interested in it going wrong if they are just another player.

If you were the handicap/competitions secretary and someone requested for a junior (their sex is irrelevant) to go in a paid entry comp off 54, is that OK? What would you do then?

Hope I haven't hijacked it gaz.

I have an opinion, but I was waiting to see what the forum's thoughts were before I said anything else.

Also, I only mentioned it was a girl because I wasn't sure if the max 54 was the same for boys and girls. If it is then I agree it's not relevant. :)

We have no maximum handicap for the team.

The teams are up on the notice board so we know the rest of them. Their handicaps add up to 25.

If it was a 3 person team they would get 1/6 hc, so 4.2
Being a 4 person team it's 1/10 so if the junior played off 54 that would make an allowance of 7.9 for the team.

So that's an extra 3.7 shots (over the 3 person team) offset by having to use 4 of the junior's tee shots. I think overall that's a disadvantage but by no means puts them out of it.

It wouldn't bother me unless I was right behind her and she was hacking it up the fairway shooting 15 per hole and that's probably what would happen off 54.

Get her on the range or course if quiet and teach her the game first.

If I was taking my boy I would pick the ball up straight away if he could not score or he was holding up other groups.

It's a scramble Tony.

Answer A for me.
We are constantly being reminded about golf participation numbers dwindling, so surely it's a good thing if golf can open the doors to the next generation.

I think if she would like to play in the comp, then allow it for sure, why not really really. However she/he would not be part of the scoring or handicap calculations or prize fund(especially if 4 ball texas, two ball I don't think I would worry at all). Texas scramble is a great way to be part of a team and learn how to play if just starting out and if she wants to play in a comp then I think it is mad to produce bad feeling by saying you cant play.

The real reason why I say not to count as a fourball is that the handicap of 54 could make a fair difference to the handicap calculation and really help out the team scoring(if fourball), even if she did not have one shot that counted.

I posted the difference it would make a little bit up there ^^^

Basically, it would be like giving a 3 person scramble 3.7 extra shots in exchange for them having to use 4 of her tee shots.

Seems badly managed. Great if the club can fit her in for fun but you kinda have to ensure she will not win it... 54...

Absolutely welcome to play, enjoy the comp and best of luck to them off 54 or 104. I'd pair them up with someone ideally they know and are comfortable with, but who is friendly and experienced to help with the basic rules and etiquette. Personally, would love to see them win also. Might just spark some interest in entering more comps and pursing the game further.
