Afternoon all.

I wonder if I can get some advice. I know without seeing it can be difficult to comment but I wanted some advice before I purchase a new club.

I currently have a Cobra AMP 3 wood (15 degrees i think) with a Stiff Alida rip shaft.

I am struggling to get some good results with it. I hit the rest of my Irons and Driver (amp 10.5 Stiff) with ease but when ever I pull the 3 wood out of the bag on a Par 5 or a Long 180+ yard par 3 I get a mixed bag of results.

I have tried to place the ball in the center of my stance and also a mixture of places between center and the inside left foot.

Basically where should the ball be placed?

I ask this as I was hitting a RBZ Hybrid the other day which I have the option of buying for a good price.

Cheers

Mike

Are you talking about off the tee or off the deck?

Personally I actually think my 3-wood is harder to hit than my driver. I always aim to place it in a similar position to where I hit my driver from, i.e. level with my left heel (as a r/h golfer). Sometimes it will go miles and sometimes it will be awful, but it's usually because I've managed to move my head to in front of the ball on impact, so to compensate I put a little more weight onto my right and lean my head to the right a shade. Might sound odd, but seems to work for me.

Yeah I mean off the deck.

I get what you mean. That might be a good shout

i need to practice with it as I have a comp this weekend and the 2 par 5's I have to play warrant a driver then a wood . I have tries my 5 iron (lowest in set) but I am usually 4 to the green in some cases.

stop trying to hit the ball, put the ball halfway between mid of your stance and your left foot..... and just commit to a 100% follow through swing, forget about contacting the ball just make the swing............ see if that helps :)

usually when im worried about the result of a shot I dumb it down and just tell myself to make the swing and let the impact on the ball just be a consequence of the swing

that is some good advice. thanks.

i plan to go to the range tomorrow night for some 3 wood hitting

To be honest i moved away from a 3 wood and went to a 4 wood because it was easier off the deck. That decision was also based on the amount of times I used it off the tee.
I agree that a swing through the ball is the best way. I some times set a little closed as well (not a huge amount) just to counter the possible cut. I actually think the smaller headed fairways are easier off the deck than the bigger ones.

I struggled to hit my 3 wood last year but can hit it quite well now, play it off you left heel and take a low back swing so you sweep it.

It works for me.

Quite apart from your 3 wood issues it sounds like you need something between your 3 wood and 5 iron. That is a massive gap. I have a 5 wood, 3 hybrid and 4 iron between those clubs!
A hybrid in the 20* range would probably be really useful to you.
There probably isn't a massive gap for me between my 5w and 3 hybrid but the hybrid is very useful to me when I get in a tricky situation, and I like the 5 wood from the deck, so I dropped 56 and 60 wedges for a 58 and carry them both.

Well i was looking at getting a RBZ 3 19 degree hybrid. its either that or an amp rescue club.

Mike

Sounds like a plan.
I'd go with the cobra, but thats just me (I'm a little anti-TM, and the rest of your bag is Cobra...).
But get thee to a shop where you can try them and pick the one you hit best.

The cobra baffler hybrids are great, you could probably pick one up cheap.

I rarely try and hit a 3 wood off the deck especially in a comp. Too inconsistent and the results don't outweigh the risk. If it is a roll up or I need to get in touch with my macho side at a GM meet then I'll have a bash at a par 5. I play it just inside my left heel, make sure I turn and don't slide the hips and don't try and knock the cover off it

cheers Stuey,

I was having a look on ebay and there are a few AMP hybrids that are brand new not far from me. Maybe keep the 3 wood and get a hybrid.

I have been trying to look at 3 and 4 irons to match my s3 max set, but on thinking about my last set of irons I could not hit the 3 or 4 to safe my life. So I think Hybrids might be the option.

am I the only one reading this thread and wondering how it got to focussing on the club rather than the objective?

hitting a long shot from the fairway to a small target (always smaller than a tee shot) is always going to test - for the average handicap golfer that 'test' is normally one step too far.

searching for 'the club' to resolve this is somewhat similar to seaching for the holy grail.

loving my 3 wood just now - its great for hoofing the ball up the fairway on a long par 5 - but i cant control it into a green - the 5 wood is much better for accuracy and flight

mine is quite far forward in my stance - make sure you dont try to melt it - just a lovely relaxed swing will do the trick

have fun!

Ahh the 3 wood, my béte noire. Absolutley rubbish with it until a couple of weeks ago when I stopped worrying about it going right, left, nowhere, in fact anywhere other than straight ahead. Put the ball in line with my left hip and just commited the hit it. Now hitting it 200 yards. However, still prefer the 4 wood hybrid if I'm honest. Goes almost as far but without the same degree of risk.
