Hi folks looking for some advice.

I was given an old set of golf clubs years ago, tried to play and basically could barely hit the ball. It's put me off trying again for years.

So I want to try again. I bought a couple of lessons on Groupon and my first one is tomorrow at affordable golf, I've been reading the forum and can see they have a bad rep.

So I am going to go to the lesson tomorrow. I don't own clubs and I really don't want to buy any till I'm sure I can actually hit a golf ball. Assuming I'm able to do this. What is the best method of buying some clubs after that? Not looking to spend too much obviously to get started. I'm 6" 3 so not sure if I'll need longer clubs.

I'm weary of buying clubs that don't work for me and put me off the playing forever. Ive read about custom fitting but I assume that works out very expensive and would that even work if I'm so bad?

Any advice much appreciated.

There are loads of sets of cheap clubs on ebay and you should have no problem picking up a set with bag for under a fiver. I just pulled these up in less than a minute:

I'd just find a set near to you for collection and buy them to see how you get on, if you enjoy the game then you can upgrade as you improve, if you don't then nothing lost. :D

My advice would be to go and talk with the pro at a local golf club, if you give us an idea where you are then I'm sure the good folk here would recommend someone near you. Perhaps book a lesson but above all tell him/her what you want to achieve in golf and get some good advice. You could talk with the staff at a golf retailer but remember that they're only there to sell you something.

Grab something cheap and standard, get out there and have a wack. I brought standard clubs and I'm 6 foot 1, a cheap set of Dunlop started me off fine. As I got more comfortable and realised I liked the sport I upgraded. Plenty of bargains to be had out there that are better and just as cheap as the Dunlop brand though. Good luck

I will second that re second hand clubs. My first set was a set of fakes off my brother. As a newbie you will hit some rubbish shots, as we all still do. But you will hit a screamer which will 1, give you a buzz, 2, make you think, why can't I hit them all like that. 3,get stressed coz you can't hit them all like that. 4, get hooked.
welcome to the madhouse and anything you need to know ask away.

Another point to bear in mind is not to get too disheartened if, sorry when, things aren't going your way on the range, at a lesson or out on the course. However, there will be a eureka moment when things just start to click!

For what it’s worth, I started out with a cheap set of clubs from eBay. They enabled me to go and spend a lot of time at the range, visit some pitch and putt 'courses' and small 9 hole courses.

Keep us posted with how you get on!

So I had the lesson today. It went OK. Just used an iron and practiced mainly grip.

I asked about clubs. He looked at some various things and recommended some second hand preferably Taylormade clubs that are I think 2 degrees up and an inch or half inch longer. They didn't have any so I need to check eBay etc.

Don't think I am going to have much luck finding something so specific.

Affordable golf are top notch guys dunno who's had bad dealings with them?!? They are a bit on the expensive side with their marked retail prices but deals can be done with them.

As you're just a beginner maybe just look at getting 2nd hand clubs that are a bit longer then get the lie bent into shape. My mate is the same height as you and plays standard length clubs!!!!

Sorry I though affordable golf were a big chain. I was reading around the forum and kept seeing bad things about AG. I'm thinking that's American Golf. Oops. So no bad reports about them and seemed OK to me, not that I know much.

That's what I'm thinking, just get longer clubs. If I don't get during I'll never get out.

Welcome along. Personally I'd invest in some lessons with a pro at a club or driving range. Get some firm understanding of the basics, see if it's something you think you'll enjoy and then look at the options from there. Most ranges will lend you clubs for lessons

If I remember rightly 'Wilson' golf clubs come an inch longer than standard, I started with a set of graphite 'Fatshafts' which served me well and I've still got'em in the back of the shed now !...

You can pick a set up for around £100 on eBay !...
