How strong are iron shafts?

Recently got a new set of irons. Off the tee with my driver I managed to land beneath a very small tree. I tried to punch the ball out (which worked to some extent), not a full swing though. On the follow through the shaft hit the branch. It left some green marks on the shaft and appears undamaged and is straight. Will it be ok (in reality I know it is but just need reassurance!)?

Sounds like you got away with it this time but I wouldn't suggest you made it a regular occurrence, irons shafts a quite tough but one sharp blow in the wrong place can render a shaft useless.

That depends on what kind of material the shafts are made of: If you don't see anything on a steel shaft, usualy it will be ok. Same thing with a graphite shaft can be everything from ok to total loss ... ! :(

Stiff steel shafts. The branches were very easy to move by hand. I think the branch would have moved lessening the shock and the shaft moved with the direction of the branch rather than a square impact. Like I said it wasn't a full swing and was at the end so I'm sure it's fine.

Out of interest if a shaft did get broken assume a new shaft can be fitted by a pro to match?

Broke the steel shaft on my 8iron a coupe of months back and wasn't even playing a shot (was no more than a swish of the club on the range) just too close to a wooden trellis and it snapped clean in two

Just hit the wrong contact point

Replaced by a local repair shop couple of days later, good as new

Snapped 2 PX shafts on trees on follow through. They snapped very easily. OP if there is no dent or bend you could be ok.

No dent, scratch or bend. I had to go back to the small tree to check how sturdy it was. The moss mark indicated it has moved along the branch rather than a straight impact!

I've snapped loads of shafts. Very easy to replace, possibly too easy!

how do you snap loads of shafts?
in all my years of playing i have only ever had one snap on me and that was hitting a tree root in the middle of a fairway ,.new course that was poorly cleared of trees as a lot of people broke shafts while playing there, Tilgate Forest in Crawley.

Played it once, never played anywhere that was in such bad condition (that day).

Easy, I have a foul temper, and shafts are cheap.
