So I’m waiting to be served in a well-known golf retailer and over-hear a salesman advising a mature male customer who was about buy a variety pack ‘lake’ balls.

He said “Well Sir you realise that you can’t change the type of ball mid-round, so if you start playing with a lake ball (which say is a Srixon) you’ll need to find another of the same make if you loose that ball.”

The customer said he never knew that rule and thanked the sales assistant and then proceeded to buy a pack of ‘brand’ balls. I suggested to the guy that this was a myth and he should ignore the comments. However he chose to say he did already know that you had to play your round with the “same ball”.

There have been times I've been tempted to complete the round with a different set of clubs let alone balls!

I love it when these sales guys try that line on me. Tend to get a short shrift and lose a sale. You can see them visibly perk up when a new golfer or someone clearly not that certain about what they needs come in. The pound signs almost shine in the eyes. Where did customer service go

I had a chuckle in American golf one day when I heard a customer ask " are these x hot irons blades?" sales man says "they are semi-blades".

tell them what they wanted to hear!

My wife was on the lookout for a new driver. We were wandering round AG one Saturday morning and she saw just what she was after so had a few hits in the net and decided that was it. Sales boy was desperate to put his knowledge to good use and tried to guide her to a "better" choice than the one she'd chosen. After a short attempt he gave up and as they made their way to the cash desk he asked why she'd chosen that model. Knowing exactly what he was doing she gave the classic answer... I liked the colour :-)

And that's as good a reason as any! :)

Long story so I won't bore with the details, but I actually got an upgraded new car when I threatened to pull out of the deal due to delays. Same car was on the forecourt but I refused it as 'I liked the colour' of the one I had chosen. Resulted in aforementioned free upgrade to a higher spec car on same forecourt to compensate for being a different colour. :)

Brilliant!

It went when they were paid 6.75 an hour and got 10% commission on everything they sold and an extra 10% on targeted items.
I was getting less than that there a couple of years ago before I left to get a proper wage, years ago before it was owned by a bank the guys were telling me the commision was fantastic, you could make £20-£30 on a single driver sale.
