quick q, how much of golf as a percentage is mental over physical or vice versa?

Personally I know when on song I can have a birdie putt on most holes unless stupid long but I get very few. Partly its swing flaws but I believe its 75% mental in that I either think/concentrate too much or not enough.

Opinions please.....

80% physical 20% mental

Im a firm believer in natural talent having a level and everyone will find theirs eventually - the 20% is for the course management

Golf is about played 90% of the time on a six inch course. It's largely mental. Once you have a reasonably reliable swing, it's about how you manage your thoughts and way around the course. That's why NGT has been a huge plus. Double on 12 today, birdie on 13 and no dwelling. Double on 5, coming to my "nemesis" the 6th (although there shouldn't be any room for the nemesis word in NGT). Glorious 4 iron to 12 feet and safe par. Finding it easier to let the past go and stay in the here and now

so you know you can nut drives down the middle but suddenly lose the ability, is that mental or physical?

Believe that will be physical attribute because physically you havent managed to get a consistent swing every time you drive.

I think mentally you have to have it under control, plan your way around the course from shot to shot, dismiss your bad shots and remember your good ones, BUT, you have to physically swing the club and make the shots, which does require a reasonable amount of physical skill. So of the two, it's more physical than it is mental.

or a bit of both?

There will be a small bit of mental in there but i believe that the pros are that good because they can hit the ball with a consistently great swing - a lot of that comes from natural ability which has been worked and nurtured from lessons etc. The mental bit will be from the choices people make on the course.

what about the yips?

I know its technique but it also becomes a mental issue where technique can get lost because of the mental block.

Its probably a subject that is as broad as it is long. Just trying to gauge different opinions. (Played shocking in Ireland and it became more mental than physical imho hence asking)

Thats a lack of technique issue imo - in thats 20% confidence will play a big chunk of it.

exactly the point of the post... you know the technique, practice swing is great, address the ball then BAM! balls it up.

Thats surely mental?

Not really imo you have failed to swing the club properly - thats physical

damn your stubborness Phil ;)

i just dont really think when im playing golf - just go with the flow and hit the ball. Sometimes i believe people can think too much and it does end up doing no good. Less think more hit is my golf thinking.

But why have you failed to swing the club properly?
Because you're think about either too many things or the wrong things...

90% Mental
5% Physical

And another 5% Mental!!!

For me, 95% mental. On the very rare occasions I sort my head out I play out of my skin. More often than not, I am standing over at least one shot a hole doubting the shot/club I have chosen or my ability to execute it (regardless of how conservative).

At the end of the day, practice is for working on a swing and you have to trust it on the course. For me, and I can only speak for myself, the RAF section in NGT has made a world of difference for being able to see the shot, rehearse, aim, feel it and just let it go has freed me from too many swing thoughts

Becausenyou're think about either too many things born the wrong things...

Because physically your technique isnt consistent enough i believe.
