Afternoon all, just a quick discussion on how much importance do people put on there handicap,I am struggling to get to comps or rather the day of the comps, when I can play there normally is no comps.Would this concern you or would you just enjoy the rounds when you can get out, even if it means your handicap would eventually become non active.

if you couldnt play and keep a handicap there is little you can do. Altough you could maintain it yourself to a degree i guess. I care in as much that its an indicator to me of how I am progressing. Some like to boast about having a cat 1 handicap to the point that they are prepared to lie about it, when they have drifted back up to cat 2.

I read the question as one of the importance of retaining a (c) handicap (non active doesn't exist now!) and the answer is to just submit supplemental cards when you do play - (c) handicap retained; the end.

All depedns on what you want to get out of golf - if you just want to play social golf with your mates then its not a massive issue

We have a group of about 20 members who dont play comps they play in the afternoon and just look after their own HC for their swindle and they just have a laugh.

If you want to play in comps then obviously it needs to be active and is therefore important

As said, I do howeve find it strange that many club members don't know about the supplementary card option. Could this be a club fault.

we dont have any facility for sup cards at our place, one of the reason i am leaving there

I'd rather play comps than anything else and will always try to make sure I can make competition day. It's not always possible but that is the aim. I'd play a qualifier every week if I could.

That's strange! Why don't they?

Have you mentioned to them that they are obliged to provide for them? And that not doing so means they are not complying with Congu requirements, so their right to maintain handicap could be at risk? The Area Authority might have a view on this too!

At my age keeping my 5 HC is important to me and considering I've played over 35 Q comps at various courses this year i'm not trying to protect it. Hate going up to 6 and I always do it from time to time, then no sooner I post a few scores that get me below 5 to give me some breathing space.

Can't be bad at 62 years young. After 40 odd years playing, I posted my first ever level par round in a comp this year.

It's everything to me, I want to get as low as possible. Social golf is great, but I'm not fussed about winning a society event or a bit of 4bbb. I'd love it.... I said I'd love it to get to cat 1 :o

Its a nice to have, a good reference point to use when I go out to play, for just a hole, for 9 or even 18 and more.

Also when you first meet another golfer its nice to be able to say you have one.
