Just watched a video with Louis Oosthuizen and he says he thinks many young guys burn out because they play too much... for us older mere mortals what would you consider "too much"

My dream is a lottery win so I can play or practice every day (the actual jackpot not the pitiful £1m prize) but I think if that ever came to reality I'd possibly lose a lot of love playing/practicing every day....

In fact when I have played 3 days in a row I end up not picking up clubs for a week then the bug gets me back.

What would you consider too much?

I've been to Myrtle Beach many times, usually for about 12 nights. Generally play 3 days then a day off and repeat until the end of the holiday. 9 rounds is usually ample for me in the time scale, sometimes go to a range and do a bit of short game practice on the non playing days.

Don't think there can be too much TBH. Spend 2 weeks abroad regularly and play everyday, sometimes twice a day and never get bored. Could easily play every day.

Weather dependant, this Winter 2-4 times per week, Spring - Autumn 3-5.

I do find my back tends to play up after 36 in a day or two days in a row. That said I would still play every day if the body didn't fight back.

Even when I collapse exhausted from 36 holes its about 24hrs before I'm desperate to play my next round

when we first moved back to Inverness i played every weekday for about 3 months, by then i was a bit golfed out and needed a rest from it. also take a 3 weeks off a Christmas and play everyday weather permitting except CD and NYD. glad to get back to work after that.

Ask the wife - probably get a different view on the answer though the large lottery win mentioned might do the trick (even if you do have to trade her in !).

I play my best golf playing twice a week

When I was working 9-5 I was at range every week (due to time) and played sat with a odd mid week round during the longer days. Doing this I was playing my best golf.

After cut backs and playing 3/4 full rounds a week my handicap starting up.

3 times a week is enough for me with an occasional 4th round for a match or knockout or away weekend. We go to Turkey every year for 7 nights. We play 4 rounds and I really enjoy the days we don't play.

Too much? - not sure I comprehend>

Our annual golf holiday is 11 rounds in 6 days - on the way back one usually harbours thought along lines of "never want to see a golf club again". But it's worn off by the middle of the next week.

I don't think its the amount of golf alone that is the issue.

Its all the travel, plus practice, plus competition stress/play plus additional training. Repeat that week in week out all season and a good portion of the off season too and you get burnt out golfers.

Add to this the fact that those who are usually the best at what they do is because they do things in an almost unnatural way, putting extra stress on their bodies. Happens in almost every sport, Nadal, Ronaldo, Woods... the list goes on.

Playing different courses through the week keeps it fresh - and different formats too.

This week, 4 games over three courses - one matchplay pairs, one singles roll up, one Texas scramble, one three man team - two to count.

The last time I was made redundant it was in the summer (convenient) and so was at the club every day. If I didn't fancy a round I'd practice. This went on for three months until HID got twitchy about finances and getting a job but I never got bored.

How much did it improve your golf and did this help you get your handicap moving in the right direction ?
