Personally I prefer at the moment to visit pay and play courses because I am still working and don't really have the time to play more than about 6 times a month. But when I retire I I'm aiming to play twice a week at least and join a club so that I can get good value out of a membersip to a course. What I was wondering was how much do you use your course membership on average , obviously it's more in summer but is it good value or just for the kudos of belonging o a club?

A lot more than enough to get good value for my membership

Work shifts so I'm playing at least 4 times a week

Even the years when I play only once a twice a week, it still works out at under £10 a round so great value

If you are a member of a club you will play more as you have no need to pay each time you play , you can pop up in the long summer evenings for say 6 holes and a pint , your way you wont bother as its 18 or nothing , I would not pay a green fee just to play a round of golf on my own ....................EYG

We were both off for a week in November. Worked out it cost us the equivalent of 20p per hole played that week.

Mike, if you are playing 6 times a month on average then you must be very close to the break even point for membership. I'm guessing a decent club in your area is £1000-1200pa? What are you paying in green fees each time you play?

And as mentioned, as a member you get a lot more for your money......popping up for a few holes in the evening and/or a pint plus you also get an official handicap. Access to competitions, social events......money well spent IMHO

Also I don't really think there is "kudos" in belonging to a club as such because most golfers are members of either a golf club or a regular playing society. Even members clubs reputation are changing a bit from the old stuffy brigade. Golf membership is so much more accessible now to everyone who wants to join a club

And we get 25% off on our bar spends for food and drink , that's £2.50 on £10 spent , soon adds up , then there is the free golf at other clubs ...............no brainer my friend ..................EYG

The value is about more than how often you play for me, it's about knowing that when I can play, there will always be someone up there I can get a game with. We don't have booked tee times so I don't have to worry about that, I can turn up on Saturday or Sunday morning and play in the greedy and I don't have to commit to being there so it's flexible if something comes up at home. If there's a midweek comp and I can get out of work at short notice I know I can get a game without having to arrange anything, just turn up and see who's about, likewise if I just fancy a knock after work.

How much it actually costs me per round is largely irrelevent and I don't think about it in those terms.

I agree.gif

Generally only once a week in winter, maybe 6 times a month in summer, I prefer to be a club member for various reasons, and even only playing once a week I believe it is still good value.

As usual @HawkeyeMS you and I see eye-to-eye on such matters. The OP also referred to 'value or just kudos'. I myself don't consider any 'kudos' I may get from being a member coming into the equation at all. Kudos is just not something I think about and to me it matters not one iota what others might think of me being a member of a good golf club.

For me the equation is more value for money and/or 'being a member of a members club' - with what that means to me beyond just being able to play golf round a cracking track.

Not as much as I'd like sadly. Working away all week means time there is limited, although value is balanced by having a country rather than full membership.

I do miss nipping up for 6 or so holes whenever I like. Grab a buggy and play 18 in about an hour late on a summers evening :)

Like D4S said - even at £20 average for a round, 6 times a month is 72 a year that is £1440, sounds like you'd be getting value out of a membership now.

Play at least every sunday, and depending on shifts i can sometimes play every morning of the week. I play 95% of my golf at my home club and only play other courses occasionally with a mate. Value for me if going only on the sundays is like £2.50 per round even less when going other times too.

I know if i wasnt a member at a club id play even less, that i dont think it would be worth it. If i was to pay per round at my club id have paid for membership within a couple months on green fees. fair enough i could move around and play else where but i get that with member ship anyway, half price at all other clubs in the borders.
