How many times a year should you hit your handicap?

If you're an improving golfer.....regularly + beyond it.

If you've reached your skill level threshold...... in buffer often, play to handicap every month or so.

All clarity removed.

Over a year I would say about 15-20% of rounds should be buffer or better.
I'm sure the Powers that be have a figure....

If you change your golf clubs every 5 weeks - not very often

In comps Prob around 20% but depends on different variables

the handicap system handicaps you to play to buffer or better a certain % of the times you play, and this will vary with your handicap category.

it's not rocket science to work out what you have to do in each category for your handicap to remain at a particular level using a normal distribution curve. For cat 1 it works out about 40% and for cat 4 it's going to be around 20%

a new and improving golfer will be doing better than this and their handicap will be reducing

Agree with the above. Another way of looking at it is that a cat 1 golfer should average 2 shots over his/her handicap, cat 2 it should be 3 to 4 shots over etc. Written by the EGU:

"- The EGU will not allow clubs to automatically amend handicaps of Category 1
players (handicaps scratch to 5.4) but they are expected to play on average 2 shots
worse than handicap.
- A Category 2 player(handicaps 5.5 to 12.4) - 3 to 4 shots worse
- A Category 3 player (handicaps 12.5 to 20.4) - 5 to 6 shots worse
- A typical Category 4 player (handicaps 20.5 to 28) should expect to play, on an
average day, 6 to 7 shots over handicap e.g. a 21 handicap player will usually play
to 27 over.
-Where there is a demonstrable trend for the player’s net differential during the
year being greater than + or – 3 and particularly greater than + or – 7 the computer
will recommend increase or decrease accordingly. The computer’s software reviews all
players (including those whose handicaps have been amended during the year after a
qualifying competition), takes into account the Competition Scratch Scores and
comparisons with other players of comparable handicap when making its
recommendations."

A study showed that most players of a given cat are within half a shot of this.

A couple of years back (I think) I read an article put together by EGU from Howdidido stating the average club golfer only plays to his handicap 2.7 times a year.

I hope to hit buffer or better every time I play. That's not possible, obviously, but realistically expect to do so at least 50% of the time..... Of course my handicap is dropping so sooner or later that will tail off.

Excuse my naivety but what is 'buffer'?

Your buffer is a number of shots that you're permitted to be over handicap by and still not receive 0.1 back.

The actual number varies with your handicap category, for instance:
Cat 1, handicap = 5 or less, Buffer = 1 shot
Cat 4, handicap = 21 to 28, Buffer = up to 4 shots

Buffer in general terms as I understand is the amount of shots over CSS or it might be the par where you don't get .1 back - it's also different for each cat

ie Cat 2 for example has 2 shots over CSS

So if CSS is 72 and the player has a 74 then they won't get an increase of .1 on their HC

Im sure if it not exactky correct someone will correct it soon enough
