How many people work in your Highway Maintainence Department

Careful Bob, you'll have The Asphalt Industry Alliance after you......the trade body for road menders

IN Aylesbury we're undergoing resurfacing of many many roads
We had a load done last year too as the Olympic Torches came through the Town.
High Wycombe, covered by the same County Council, barely has a road worth the title - more like farm tracks, only worse...

Not that I'm complainin'....

We had the potholes on the road outside the house 'repaired' again today. They do them about every 3 months.
One guy driving the dumper truck, one guy filling the pothole with tar and the third guy knocking it down with the back of his shovel.
On average the repairs last 2 days before they're as bad as ever again.

Oh! And the incompetent buggers managed to leave their shovels behind.

It's been like that down here for years now.
We have potholes in the roads you can lose a good size 4x4 in. On the main road we had road works for a week to repair the road properly having the potholes torn up and fresh tarmac layed properly. They didn't even finish the bad bits so they shut the road overnight for a week to do the rest but new holes appeared before they even repaired the old holes and now we are waiting for those to be repaired.
Word from a council worker is they are planning to top dress the main road now which is a complete waste of time and money for an A road with the weight of traffic this one has.

I've posted this before but it's worth doing again..
I heard on the radio a year or 2 back, and Expert in road damage/repair state that as soon as a hole appears in a road you have to dig up about a square yard to stop it reappearing - and you have to do that within 7 days otherwise you have to do 10 yards in every direction to get rid of the water that seeps in.
How many Councils do that?

It does work both ways.
A friend of mine was called out on an emergency and worked throughout the night for about 8 hours without a break.
He was knackered and driving home in his cooncil van pulled off the road to stop himself falling asleep at the wheel.
He slept for about an hour and in that time three curtain twitchers had reported the van number with a council worker asleep to the council.

Golden rule of a road worker is that if you are doing nothing, which naturally happens a bit in that type of work, make sure you have a shovel in your hand.

Cooncil staff are easy targets but an AWFUL lot of guys posting on HERE seem to be doing it in their work time. I don't know how some of them can hold down jobs.

More to the point, why should the council do it; is it actually their hole to repair? By and large, the council resurfaces large areas which are far less likely to fail than the small patches cut out by utilities, but whenever a pothole appears it's always the council's fault, never anybody else's.........

Fully agree with everything you've posted mate.

And to answer your last line about how we hold down jobs while posting here (and other places) I can confirm it is because my work is to an exceptional standard. Well, usually... sometimes...

Including yourself eh?? ;) Council and related workers in my experience ( can I stress in my local areas only and I dont speak for them all) and are renowned for being a bunch of lazy so and so's where they all proove themselves to be complete jobs worth's!! Ive been patiently waiting for some feedback on a planning application for over 3 months now.... Ive done most of the searches and written polite letters and even helped them with information they could find themselves on line if they bothered to look... Im now waiting for the beloved Highways people to respond..... The thing is that they are all dragging every thing out because of the cuts thats happening from central government and trying to make out they are under staffed.... and all its doing is exposing them for what an easy time they've had in the past. They dont answer their phones, respond to emails and the reality is that they work (I use that word loosely) 9 -5 (1 hour for lunch ) and 3.30 on Fridays at the most and do the absolute minimum then go on strike demanding more pay!!! My planning officer works 1.5 days a week????? Whats that all about??? How can she do a proper job on those hours? Compare them to the commercial sector and they wouldn't last an nano second!!! Sack them all and commercialise the whole set up in my opinion and lets get rid of these people and give the jobs to those who will work and get the economy moving FFS! Bloody joke the lot of them :sbox:

Had to dig this one out from my archives..

Having worked in Local Government for 25 years vkurup is just about spot on.
In my first year working for a council I was told that building maintenance covered any building problems.
First time I used them I phoned to report a broken window.
QS. Is it an emergency
Me. Well a golf ball went through a window
QS but is it an emergency
Me. well the window is broken
QS.I can get it repaired today if it is an emergency but there is a big call out charge.
Me. Well I can board it from the inside but it would not be too secure.
QS. Ok do that and I will check it ASAP

Three days later QS arrives to check, measure and place an order for repair.
Council in house contractor arrives two days later to check, measure and place repair order
About a week later two guys repair window.
A week later the Contractor turns up to inspect finished repair.
A month later QS turns up to inspect repair and place payment order.

That was 30 years ago and I am glad to say that things are much better nowadays.

Arnt we all?!! Well sort of and if I worked for the council in the past Id be on lovely fat pension as well no doubt!
