How many people play with a stock shaft in their driver?

And if you do use a stock shaft were you fitted for it or just bought of the shelf ? The reason i ask is i bought my driver around 18 months ago of the shelf. Its only after reading the forumn/magazines and generally learning more over that time that i realise how different my driver might have been with a fitted shaft.

Ping K15 with regular stock shaft, bought off ebay 18 months ago. Love it.

Re: How many people play with a stock shaft in their driver?

My 1st custom fitted driver G10 12* was a stock shaft and I've regretted selling it ever since, though the i15 I've got now with a ust axiv core shaft is a really good set up.

I do.

But I'm no model as all my clubs are stock shafts, or at least how they turned up from ebay.

Re: How many people play with a stock shaft in their driver?

According to the Titleist web site, one of the stock shaft offerings for the 913D2 is the Adila RIP Phenom 70 3.2, but my 913 has a Adila RIP Phenom 60 2.9, I think this was a stock offering from the previous Titleist 910 which better suited me when I was custom fit.

Re: How many people play with a stock shaft in their driver?

I have a stock shaft in the Cleveland, though it's a 'real' one and part of why I bought the club.

Only other stock shaft I've had in the past 10 years has been a Ping G15 'upgrade/alternative' (low torque) one. The combo just worked perfectly!

@Khamelion. Phenom RIP 70 is standard, but other Phenom RIPs, including 60 are available as Custom no Upcharge - much like my G15 one was

With the spin rate and launch perfect in my Cleveland I felt no reason to change. If it had been a little off I might have tried different ones as the club head was better than others tested for off centre hits and usual miss.

Re: How many people play with a stock shaft in their driver?

Have the bog standard shaft in my driver and its immediate predecessor. Went through a driver fitting a few years back and had a better shaft fitted but it didn't make that much of a difference for me so won't be going there again ;)

Re: How many people play with a stock shaft in their driver?

I had the original Razr Fit driver which I brought off the rack. The driver was good but my ball flight was quite low and it was causing me to lose distance off the tee.

I spent a good couple of months researching different shafts and managed to try out 3 or 4 different shafts in my Razr Fit driver. One of the shafts I tried was the Aldila Trinity shaft which comes stock in the Xtreme. From the first ball strike that shaft proved to be the one for me, producing some good numbers on the launch monitor and giving me a healthy increase in distance.

Of course there was little point in just buying the shaft at nearly £70-£80, so I opted to sell my Razr fit and get the Xtreme. Best move I made and its going to take something pretty special for me to take it out of my bag.

Re: How many people play with a stock shaft in their driver?

Apart from having my swing speed measured and being told its got to be a stiff, I've not gone hunting for, for example, a low kick point high spinning...

The current driver has a reg shaft in, and it works well for me. It makes me concentrate on swinging slower, which certainly helps keep the ball in play.

Re: How many people play with a stock shaft in their driver?

I've got the stock kurokage silver stiff shaft in my covert tour.
I tried lots of drivers and a few with different shaft options. The best overall fit for me was the covert tour with the stock shaft.

I didn't have a fitting with a proper custom fitter who has loads of shaft options, I tried all that were available at the places I tried. Proper custom fitters seem few and far between in this country. I spend some time on a yank forum and they all seem to have a fitter and have tried loads of shafts and no-one is playing stock. I think we have a lack of access to that kind of service over here. I'm not about to drop £300 on a custom shaft without trying it first.

Re: How many people play with a stock shaft in their driver?

Yep ive got the stock stiff shaft in mine , would love a fitting even to just see what difference if any it would make .. doubt it as far as my driver goes tho, well not enough to warrant extra cost of a different shaft anyhow

Re: How many people play with a stock shaft in their driver?

When I was fitted for my irons and wedges in January, I asked the fitter about my woods.

He advised what I should look for and 'suggested' a few options. One of which I later took and suits me prety well.

Stock option in the 910 range, which arent bad at all IMHO.

Re: How many people play with a stock shaft in their driver?

Stock shaft that I was fitted for. TBH, there will be a stock shaft that works for most of us.

I do agree, not all manufacturers offer a range of stock shafts in their clubs though so it depends who you go with. Titleist are good for this, ping do in the Anser but not the g25. Nike don't, I was lucky the stock shaft worked well for me.
Do Taylormade offer a selection of shafts as stock?

Re: How many people play with a stock shaft in their driver?

I spotted an advert for a local(ish) shop that is doing free driver shaft fittings, you make an appointment, hit a few balls with your driver, to see if the shaft you have in is the right one fot you. As it's free of chrage I may take them up on the offer.

Re: How many people play with a stock shaft in their driver?

stock shafts in everything- when I was 'fitted' for a driver shaft the best suited to me was the Accra shafts that Luke Donald uses.......as I am totally minted and have several money trees in my garden I of course had them custom fitted in everything I own.........or..................... I said thanks but at my level and frequency of play I'll not notice much, so will stick with the stock offerings- that arent bad with a few manufacturers..

I wonder what the results might be

Re: How many people play with a stock shaft in their driver?

The range near me does driver fittings, £30 a go, I went for one and to be honest it was worth the money to spend an hour on the launch monitor with a pro. But the lack of even the full range of stock shaft offerings for the brands they stock really limits the value, I couldn't make a definitive decision as so didn't buy. If you need a reg shaft you're golden but I am borderline stiff/xstiff and they only had two xstiff offerings for me to try across their whole range of clubs. This is a consistent problem, I went somewhere else and they had no xstiff shafts at all.
As it turns out after much searching around I did end up going for a stock stiff shaft in my driver, that they did have at the first place, but I needed to try the rest to be sure.
