How long into a round before you drop the driver?

Played on Saturday and started reasonably well off the tee. After around 7 holes I started to wobble and whilst not disastrous I started to push it right and left. I didn't go 3 off the tee but it put me in trouble and l lost shots hitting sideways. After 4 bad holes I left the driver alone and went to my rescue club. I am not 100% with this club but I am straighter and it saw me through most of the rest of the round. I lose 20-30yds off the tee but clearly being in play is a better option.

So the question - I went 4 holes before changing and looking back I regret that. Two is perhaps too premature, maybe I should go after three. For other people who are iffy off the tee, do you have an agreed number of bad tee shots that trigger you leaving it alone for the rest of the round?

Depends on nature of game i suppose. on occasions my fade can mutate into a horrid slice so I am fighting sometimes. However, I normally stick with it as i need to be hitting the ball well for 3w anyway so next stop is a hybrid and the distance penalty is such that most par 4s become 3 shots so might as well keep trying driver, even if it means D-hack-play to green as would be H-H-play to Green anyway so no differance on card. Doing this I normally get some good drives away eventally so mentally I've not given up on it which I think could become a bigger obstical next time than a poor round?

My 2c anyway, looking forward to the replies.

I keep threatening to leave it at home but dont. I have occasionally not used it say if a hole is shorter and a lesser club will do the job but generally I will go for it even if swinging pants (most rounds). Apart from over in Ireland when I couldnt hit a pw let alone a driver

I know I can hit the thing decent its just a case of perseverance sometimes.... or sheer stubborness :)

Isnt it the other way round for most golfer? Safety of the tee until the score goes then its driver on every tee all the way in?

Ask Captainron yesterday, 4 iron for safety in the deepest darkest rubbish, provisional driver boomed straight down the middle.:whoo:

A week or so ago I went for a quick 9 holes because it was a windy day and in the afternoon it gets dark pretty quick so I decided to just use a 7 iron off the tee and some times for the second shot.

The par 5s were 7 shots but the rest of them weren't too bad as the approach shots meant that I could get it closer to the pin and walk away with a decent score ( for me ) .

Normally if I duff two drives on the trot then out comes the three wood.

Same for me, even if it is not great, It's still the easiest club in the bag to get a solid contact and get the ball out there. On tight driving courses, if the driver is not working I don't really find any club off the tee that easy to get away, I can reach the rubbish with a rescue just as easily as a driver...... :-)

If its stopping me scoring for a couple of holes then its out the bag until I make it work again, which normally means some practice or range time

As it happens its more out than in :o

Sometimes 1 shot is all I need to tell me its not going to happen with the driver.
Sometimes it doesn't even make the bag
At the moment its in all the time and if the shot needs it then it gets it.

There are one or two short par 4s where attacking with driver is optional, on a good driving day I will go for it, on a bad day I might hit a 3 iron. It's never dropped altogether as there are other holes that drive is always the right play, eg 18th is a must hit driver hole at my course!
