Totally subjective, as it depends what you consider 'ok'.

I got my first h/c in 2011 and it took me until this year (so 2 years) to think I was playing ok. Sometimes I play well, sometimes I'm rubbish, so 'ok' is about the average state of my game.

Consistantly, for me, not sure there is a ok, hit a net 74, 75 & 77 in medals which I prefer, next round 45 pts with a blob can't seem to get a run.

1 week (actually slightly less....)

An Uncle bought me an old (v old and this was in 1970's!) half set and invited me to Edinburgh for a week to play and learn....because I could easlily beat him by the end of the week I felt I had it cracked (as McBroon explains that's only the start though!).

Probably took about another 2 months to get to 18 'ish - first handicap was 17 (under the old system - probably about a 15 in today's system)

Never. I can play close to my handicap one day and struggle to break 28 the next. My game lack any degree of consistency at the moment. The game can't be tamed so I am trying to accept this more and take whatever happens on any given day

started playing seriously at about 22, 16 years ago. 2011 was probably the first year I felt like I really knew what I was doing, then 2012 was a shocker. In truth, I don't think you can ever be confident that things are "OK"

Never!

Its one step forward, 10 backwards. If you play well one day you will expect to the next time and it won't happen so you;ll never finish a year thinking you've cracked it there will always be somewhere we can do better.

Golf is different from any other sport in that you can never beat it - even at the very top!

So very subjective what folk think is Ok.

Personally I think playing off/to 18 is a good level of 'competence' for someone on the way down.

Thanks for all replies,Am I trying to run before I can walk,I have being playing golf for 12 months this month, handed 3 cards in and got 24 handicap,I have gone under 100(94 to be exact but didn't hand this card in ,as someone said handicap adjustment might of put a little bit of pressure on me to keep to handicap)once this year, getting around 101 to 110 per round.Feel like I should be playing better,is this me or do others sometimes feel the same as at the moment don't feel I am playing to my handicap.Last 8 comps my handicap has gone up by 0.1 each round now 24.8(25)handicap.Feel a little deflated as when I got handicap was chuffed I know 28 or 24 is not much of a difference but felt it was when I got it.

Firstly, you should have put that 94 card in - tut tut to whoever told you not to.

Secondly, you aren't supposed to play to your h'cap all the time and 0.1s are quite normal. If it makes you feel any better, I didn't get a cut for the best part of 3 years when I got my first h'cap. Just don't put too much pressure on yourself to play to your h'cap, try to relax and enjoy it.

Was a few months after taking up the game, I won two of my first three comps off 17.

I have really yet to feel back into it after coming from a long lay off, I have set some PBs of late but I feel I am yet to capture the form I had first time round. I am only 7 months back so plenty of time yet :)

Played only socially for years initially, I have only been playing regular golf for 9 months and I feel like I am just about getting there. I am very streaky though and have had spells of great play, then spells of just awful golf.

Never satisfied, if I have a good round below h/cap I think why can't I do that all the time, so never ever going to feel that I have got as far as I can go
