Not at all important to me during play but think about specific mechanics lots during practice.

Seriously good answer

If you can get to the stage where you ingrain the right things on the range so you it is natural on the course you will play better golf.

I'll throw this into the ring....

I have never seen anyone with what I'd describe as a poor swing have a h/cap less than 4.

With a poor swing it's still possible to get to 4 h/cap albeit you might struggle to keep it there, short game would be a HUGE part of that.

If, as some have stated, the golf swing is a natural action, why do most of us do it so badly?

It's the weighted part on the end of the stick that throws us. Take that off and most people swing lovely...did you ever see someone swing a broom handle with an 'over the top' action?

Depends how you define mechanics, if returning the club to the required position at impact is 'mechanics' then I'd disagree with you. if however you are looking at the entire swing and perhaps defining something that is perceived 'ugly' as mechanics, then I'd agree with you. Impact is all that counts... and that IS mechanics.

Furyk has an ungainly swing, when it works he's brilliant... when it doesn't he misses the cut. That's golf.

When it's not working he has to fix it... that's mechanics.

I agree with that. Im happy if I can get it right at impact. Not bothered if I do 7 twirls at the top of the backswing as long is I can get the club back where I want it.

That's only a small part of mechanics as a whole though even though its the most important imo.

I have in the Logan Trophy a couple of years ago. When the guy took a practice swing then set up to the ball I thought he was larking around. Even a 28hcp would have laughed.

He played off +2

I love setting up to the ball in front of a crowd, it's something that I actually get a buzz from, the more the merrier.... I then love it when I hear them mumble..."oh my god, look where he's aiming!" :D

When I'm in front of a crowd I think is the only time I forget about mechanics and just hit it (as my sole aim is to not look too much of a tool!)

All I can say to that is thank God I didn't have a mouthful of coffee when I read it :D

I'm not worried about looking like a tool, if I did that I'd never play the game again :D

I remember topping a drive 50yds once in front of a packed balcony, the silence was awesome! :D I then went on to birdie the hole (par 5), nearly holed my 3rd shot for eagle, and felt like walking back to the clubhouse to tell everyone that I'd actually birdied it, not that I did.

Absolutely vital. One hundred per cent. Can't agree it's a natural thing to do, a golf swing. Otherwise, how come when I go for a lesson, the pro takes a vid then breaks it down into frames and then we have to run over all the details? Then I get a drill, then we look at it again. He says to me to forget technical stuff on the course, but I can't really. Agree that if you have a repeatable golf swing that is groomed on the range after technical analysis then you can take it with you to cope with pressure situations.

For me it is very important as I want to get better and by understanding things I can. I hope I get to a level where its not too important!

You play off about 4 or 5 h/cap? Out of interest.... Why don't you play off scratch?

Could it be that your swing isn't good enough to play off scratch?

I don't play off scratch for several reasons.......

1) Yes, my swing isn't good enough
2) Yes it could be better
3) I play about once a fortnight so I think I do pretty well to maintain my handicap at this level
4) Have you seen my short game?
5) I have neither the time nor inclination to work hard enough to get down to that level and TBH, as I'm mid 50's it ain't gonna happen now.

Sounds about right.

When I do put in some decent practice time, over the period of a couple of weeks, my game improves dramatically. Trouble is I just can't be bothered doing all the time.

So....are you guys saying that you can't stand and swing a club without having a head full of technical thoughts?

It's important to understand, when you hit a bad shot, what the swing path & clubface are doing. I drove myself mad for a long time thinking that my bad shot that started left was due solely to an out to in swing path when, all the time it was a closed clubface. Many people have no idea what recurring fault creates their bad shots or, for example, that all the duffs, hooks & pushes are caused by ythe same basic fault.

Yes, that's me. Is it good, bad, or just the level that I am at? Is it such a technical game that it has do be done, or do i need to shift it?

It's not about good, bad, right or wrong. It's about what works!

But personally for me...the less going through my head the better.
