as in the thread title ,how good could you have been at golf ?
if you had had the time to practice and had started young enough with the desire to be as good as you can ,
for me probably around high cat one .5 maybe 4 h/cap .unfortunately i will never know but we can all dream.

I played too long as a short hitter, I knew I had to make up for it with a good short game.
I worked hard and got down to 2 but was never going to beat the longer guys who also had good short games.
But if I had my time again, I wouldn't change anything.
You can't beat hitting it down the middle on a nice course on a warm summers evening and birdieing the last.

Started when I was 30 and like everyone who started late, wish I played when I was younger.
I would like to think by playing in my younger years I could have played to single figures. In reality it’s doubtful. I have never got my handicap down to the level I believe I am capable of at any age.
We can all practice hard and whilst I am sure it pays off, sooner or later your potential relies on natural talent.

My dad had me hitting balls when I was 5 with chopped down clubs. He packed up golf for awhile as did I. I used to hit them on the school field and at the range. I resent that he stopped.
Started at 26. I’ll get to single figures cat 1 is unlikely. brain will stop from that.

I am mentally weak. I peaked at 8.8. Technically I could be lower, but it is still the same old me. Don't see how it would ever be any different, however much work I put in.

I started at 10. I wasn’t a particularly strong youngster, so would have benefited with strength training. This held me back, particularly control wise. But my main weakness is and always has been putting. With coaching on this maybe I could have gotten low back then.

I’m now a better man golfer than I ever have been. Still need to learn how to putt however.

Think I reached my peak at 16 when I was playing and playing everyday. Couldn't have gone much further and while I regret not having the chance to try, I respect the advice from my parents about being realistic and knuckling down to a proper job (or in my case having a laugh with Pathetic Shark working for the civil service)

I could've been a contender
Could've been a someone
Caught up in the rat race
And feeling like a no-one
Appearing in the papers
With the money and the girls
I could've been The Heavyweight Champion of the World

Did someone tell you it wasn’t your night?

18 handicap. Got my first handicap of 18 when I was around 15 years old. Even when I was playing up to 10 rounds per week at uni I've was still never lower than 17 or higher than 19. When I stopped playing a couple of years ago (aged 42) I was still off 18. Had lessons when I was younger and again in my thirties but just don't think that I've got the natural ability to be any better than that. If I picked up the clubs again tomorrow I'd be confident of knocking it round in 88-92 without too many problems at all.

Didn't start playing until late 30s.

Started on 23, now playing off 14.

I don't have a lot of natural ability.

Cat 2 would be great for me.

No what ifs. I just try to play golf.

If money and time was not of importance. I still would of been crap. The exercise, taking the mick out of PP, PP taking the micknoutta me. seeing my PPs hit “ that shot “ and feeling chuffed for them. Hitting that shot myself and thinking am the man. It Has stopped me from Turning pro and in the process assisted Sky from apologising for every shot i knobbed followed by 10 seconds of tyrets.

If I had started as a kid I think I’d have got to scratch, but none of my family played golf so it wasn’t a sport I participated in until mid 20’s and that has been very sporadic so far.

Sailing was the family sport, so that’s what I did. Ended up being a multiple national, European and world champion so can’t really complain.
