I know the internet is no classroom and does it really matter if all the spelling and grammar is all over the place, as long as you can understand it that's the main thing.

I guess predictive texting is the culprit here.

Have you had any PRINTABLE predictive errors ?

Surely they can see the predictive text is wrong?

To answer your question Bob, I would suggest the English language will evolve into gibberish. It's getting close.

It is said that if an infinite number of monkeys type at an infinite number of typewriters one of them will produce the complete works of Shakespeare.

I guess you didn't get that one.

I h8 it whn ma m8s txt msgs dat r in txt spk its sank dat propa gr8s on ya.

Does bug me though when you have to get out an enigma machine to decipher text messages.

At least the Typewriter Company will have plenty of work manufacturing an infinite supply of them. Init.

Sadly as life gets quicker so the metaphoric language gets quikcer too. Text speak now allowed in exams means its a slippery slope to oblivion for the language

I thought the exams board had changed that so it wasn't acceptable in finals.

It's a disgrace if they haven't.

I think "evolve" is the wrong word here.

The English language has seriously devolved in recent years. It will only get worse until we are back to caveman grunts.

Wll it's sd tht th hmn brn cn wrk out tht lttrs ar mssng frm wrds nd stll wrk out wht ws tryng to be wrttn. I guess that's where text speak has come from.

You are right unfortunately, the correct word would have been 'regress'

I tink evolve iz da rite wrd

Evolve iz 2 dvelop ovr tym, n 2 b abl 2 read n undastnd ritten in4mation ina nw way iz defo developin.

All be it not standard Oxford spelling, surely people should now understand that although someone may not be able to portray their ideas in a standard way, this should not detract from the ideas they have, which may be the best freaking ideas in the world!

A friend of mine was recently interviewed for a job as a caretaker at a local school [800+ pupils]... He was told that for just over 90% of the pupils English was not the first language... Perhaps there lies the problem...

Things ain't what they used to be

Shock horror

Language changes there is no right way or wrong way just what is , no self respecting young person wants to sound like their parents
We don't speak the Same as people did a hundred years ago thank god and in a hundred years language will have changed almost beyond recognition again , languages are lost at an incredible rate so count yourself lucky ours will survive and have the chance at least to mutate

The English language is eloquent and beautiful. We gave the word a language that has been embraced as the international medium for business, poetry, politics and debate. We then create a generation that has decided lazy gibberish should replace it for the native speakers. Hopefully it will live on for the rest of the world to enjoy.

Some interesting points made in this thread, the original OP is classic.

I do wonder if many words will just become obsolete - for example;

Team A need to get a goal in next 5 minutes to have a chance.
Team B have just got an important goal.

"score" and "scored" now obsolete?

You could make quite a list. Have, buy/bought, fetch/fetched, earn, own, using, won, run, and many more.

Lazy? Maybe.

Listen to a tv/radio presenter, politician, adverts etc and make your own mind up.
