How far do you travel to go to your members golf club, how long does it take you. Also how far would you be prepared to travel to join a prefered club?
I travel about 6 miles to my club. There are 3 clubs closer to me and I pass one of them to get to mine.
I Can't think of a club I'd prefer to play at.
i left a dump about 5 mins drive from the house this year to play at a golf club which is 10 mins drive away,at this present moment its the best decision i have made in golf, but preferably i would love to roll out my bed get changed and walk across the road to the first tee
although said dump is bad it had its good points during the summer, where i met great friends, who have left to go to my new course also and its where i obtained my first ever h/p.
but the course condition is still S@@TE
I'm doing my research into a new club at the moment and so this issue is in my mind(along with many other factors) quite a lot.
for me there are two competing schools of thought
1)As close as possible- cheaper in petrol, time and convenience if you turn up and find you've left your putter at home etc.
2) The day out. A good game of golf is like a day out - or should be and we would all travel a long way to have a day out wouldn't we?
Treat it as such and the radar can be swept much further.
I'm all for the second approach particularly as the further I get away from the smoke, the more reasonable the green fees become and more it feel like i'm 'getting away'. The missus is justafiably erring towards the former. We'll probably compromise on a maximum of something around ten to fifteen miles as the crow flies.
I live about three miles or so just ten min's in the car would walk but i need a locker at the club to keep my clubs in but having said that i might feel lost if there not in the car to use just in case i get an unexspected invite?
Have travelled 22 miles each way to play golf after moving house once. Again dont think I would join a club more than 15 miles away due to petrol costs, ease of "nipping out for a few" practice, pint after etc etc.
My driving range is only 5 miles away but takes between 30-60 mins driving , my usual course is nearly 6 miles away and takes about the same. Lucky me living in London!
I love about 10 minutes away from the course that I play at. There is a nearer course on the outskirts of the village I live in and I use the range there but can get overcrowded so thought it better to travel a bit further for a quieter course.
I am very lucky mate, I choose to play most of my golf at Crieff, joined years ago as it was only one without a waiting list at the time.
I have been tempted by Auchterarder but am loyaly staying where I am for now.
I would also love to join Blairgowrie as I love the Rosemount course but waiting list is massive, but I do take advantage of winter fee's there, £35 for bacon roll, round of golf and lunch best deal ever.
Luckily my brother works at Gleneagles so usualy play there once a month with him, he only pays £50 a year the GIT.
Also have a lot of away days as you said the choice around here is fantastic.
Played Crieff a few times lovely lay out. Perthshire does have alot of great courses.
Can you tell me if Taymouth Castle has had any investment, played there about five years ago and thought it was a wonderful setting but needed some serious money thrown at it. Course was still good but left fealing it should have been better as it has the "wow" factor about the place.
Ben Lawers, Loch Tay, river, views and of course the magnificant castle itself.
My course (Royal Ascot) is only a 15 minute drive away. Have to pass Mill Ride (reputation as a quality championship course - reality overpriced uninspiring track full of corporate and society golfers). Always smirk as I go by!!!
That said I have Blue Mountain (part of the Crown group) literally 3 minutes from my house. Again the track is not great and full of too many hackers and pay & play merchants with little idea of rules or etiquette (we spoken about this before gang!!). It's driving range is fairly uninspiring, basically a big field with very few targets.
I also have Downshire Golf Complex a 15 minute drive away. Although it is pay and play it is a great track (was voted in the top 10 nationally at one time). I use the driving range as the facilities are good with lots of different greens and markers to aim at.
At the end of the day my course gives me an challenging track and the banter is good. What more do I need
Im fortunate to be within 3 miles of one of the best courses in east anglia, and therfore play there. It only takes 5-10 minutes by car, and is not at all a stressful drive. It really is a god send.
Agree it is a lovely course with fantastic scenery that we have always enjoyed playing but it was severly lacking in funding as it was privetly owned.
Thankfully they have been working on it for last 18 months and the course has been closed since work began.
They are spending £74 million on the development of the castle and golf course and have planned to lengthen the course, improve drainage, and dramatically upgrade the greens.
They claim it will have the best conditioned greens in Europe, I hope so but we will have to wait and see.
It is scheduled to re-open around March this year and we plan to play it as soon as it opens so will keep you updated.
