For H/C reasons, can anyone explain to me the diff between these 2 methods, how do they work them out and what is the most accurate?
UK CONGU Rules or PGA Calculation Method

Only asking as on another site that tracks your handicap it gives you the option of using either of the above.

Cheers

If you are in the UK use UK CONGU Rules...

*simples*

To be honest I thought there was only one way, CONGU. Didn't know PGA had their own method.

In the UK, both men and women use Unified CONGU. It is nice and simple.

In Europe they use a similar but slightly different version of CONGU but also use course and slope rating (wearch on wikipedia if you need more info)

In America they use their own system which is very complex but basically your handicap is based on the best X out of your last & rounds. I think X is 10 and y is 20 (could be wrong)

PGA Calculation method: no idea what that is, it could be the name for the US system.

What is the most accurate? That is open for debate. CONGU is simple to operate but its opponents claim that it doesn't quickly reflect current form. For instance, for your handicap to go up by 1.0 stokes you need to miss the buffer zone 10 times.

In my opinion the US system is more accurate: it also takes account of course rating and slope rating. This means that your handicap varies depending on the difficulty of the course you are going to play.

So, to answer your question, you should use CONGU if you want to track your official UK handicap but it might be more interesting to use the PGA method if your club is already looking after your CONGU handicap.

Had a look at this - wouldn't fancy trying to work out a winner on a Sunday lunchtime after a pint or two!

Complicated or what?

Probably more accurate but what a palaver!

The trick with the US system is that all card count. No such thing as a bounce game. I like hacking it round sometimes, trying stuff out, having a laugh. You can't do this with the US system.

I'm sorry murphthemog, have you got your thoughts the right way around?

If the US system takes 10 best scores from 20 cards, then you can hack around on an occasional card and it would not count. In the CONGU system, you would most probably get 0.1 back on your handicap and you would be "penalised" for "hacking" around.

The old Ladies system used to be based like this, I think it was their best 6 cards in a season. The problem here is that you end up with a lower handicap (and struggle to play to it weekly). Look at the many Ladies competitions now, played during summer, that end up as non-qualifiers, as the CSS goes too high. This is due to the Ladies having a handicap that is now too low, due to them unifying with the CONGU system. When it becomes non-qualifier, nobody receives 0.1 back on their handicap, so nothing changes. Our club has had something like 11 or 14 competitions during the season as non-qualifiers. All the Ladies need the handicaps rasing (say by 5 shots). The system would then work correctly, and those that then require any handicap reduction would receive this.

CONGU is a better system all round, as it constantly adjusts to your level of play.
