How do you shoot 45+ points...

When I was 14 and playing off 9 spent most of the winter working on the game and playing with 2 lads off scratch or close to, came out and shot a gross 67 first game the next season for 50 points, scarily I only won by 2 shots

Played against a guy at my old club last year in the stroke play knock out. It was a really windy day, I'm talking 30 mph gusts. He didn't really want to play was making all sorts of excuses, but in the end managed to get him to the first tee, he was off 17 so was giving him 9 shots. He had the round of his life and we had deicide to play the Wednesday stableford at the same time as it was a stroke play competition 46 points if my memory serves me right. He was a bit embarrassed, but I was pleased for him cos he did play well. He got cut to 12 or 13 and he was gutted!!!! :D

I've done quite a few times on our course and elsewhere, but never in medals. The main reason for this is the crazy new rule we have in QC's/medals. We have to use the championship blue tees, which are much, much further back than the white tees. In fact many are so far back that they're in another f## county, and its a joke. its almost an extra 1,000 yards over the yellow tees.

I decided to only play 3 QC events to keep my h/c current, because the best I've achieved is playing a blinder just to stay on the same number, usually I get cut 0.1 after each event. The seniors and many members on one particular hole don't even tee off as they'll never clear the lake, so just take a drop. There are 3 par 4's that become par 5's for many players, so before you start your already about 4 shots negative.

So I have no chance of getting cut to where I think I should be and in general play can play to single figures, but h/c 17'5. I suppose I average playing between 10/12, so if I make a couple of birdies and plenty of pars I score plenty.

Surley if the course is that much more difficult the css would reflect this and should be easier to get cut?

If you are getting cut it should be by 0.3 not 0.1, you would go up 0.1 and only cat1 players get cut 0.1.

Pat, sorry mate I meant being added not cut. Never been cut on my home course just go up by 0.1 after each medal.

The new tee ruling occured because a bunch of guys left a club and joined ours together. For the rest of the season they won everything going. Their handicaps were kosher, but came from somewhere which must have been tough. Can't understand why they were not given cuts, instead of having the rest of us change tees. Crazy situation that upset plenty but the owner and commitee like to do things their own way ....

Does seem strange to change the course when adjustments to the handicaps would have done the trick. What happens if you got the same again next year, lengthen the course again. What course is this by the way?

My third comp once I joined a club again I scored 44pts. Level par through 16 then messed the last 2 holes up.

I couldn't win anything because my hc was inactive. I was only playing in it because I thought it was a qualifier. It wasn't

If I was eligible to win I'd have finished 2nd :o

LIG its actually quite easy to score 45 points

first you grow a moustache

you then go get a big hat

some bandoliers

and your all set & then 45+ pts is easy

lol :D

Gorsty Hill in Cheshire. Great course and friendly club with some of the best greens anywhere. We have a lot of single handicappers who probably agreed that the white boxes were too easy, which doesn't help the majority of the membership. Its a real bug up my arse and standing on the first tee with a temper doesn't help for a good round, so thats why I only play the 3 QC's.

It just seems crazy that members play 3 rounds from the yellows and get a handicap, then to play medals from a different county on a course that is completley different in many places. As I say most players are already behind the gun by 3 or 4 shots before they start. The course then belongs to the longer hitters, especially on 2 par 4's which become par 5's. 2 par 3's require a driver on some days. Just doesn't seem fair.

I once hit 60 points 38/22 for 27 holes in one of our society do's.

I think our society best for 27 holes is 67 points. I played with the guy on the 18 hole part of the day and he just counldn't do anything wrong, chippped in, knocked in putts from off the green, sunk everything from all over the place.
I had played with him on numerous occasions and he just had one of those days. He got cut 3 shots for winning the day and I dont think he ever beat 36/54 points again in our society events.

Was he a bandit? well he lives in Australia now :D :D

Not sure why it's such a problem. Your handicap should be from the championship tees. Being scratch around a pitch and putt is a nonsense. You will also get mullered every time you play away from home.

How long is the course off the back tees? I would exepct about a 1000 yards difference between yellows and the back blocks anyway.

ppl who are generally higher handicaps arent necessarily poorer golfers they just struggle to hit their best shots consistently.

if they hook everything up on the day they can easily shoot 8 or 9 shots better....

...... BUT like i said b4 watch out for the bandito's too ;)

Yes there are bandits but it's important to remember that most players have their day at some point. We had a guy shoot a nett 57 (13 under) in one of our finals a couple of years ago. Absolutely genuine and never shot near it before or since. It all just clicked on the day and disappeared just as quick. Once shot 8 under (44 pts) playing off 7 myself, went down to 5 as a result, I wouldn't ever consider myself a bandit. These things just happen (very) occasionally.

in my case shoot 1 under which is bloody hard off the whites, not easy off the winters.
play more holes,
or you can get an iphone app, they must be good as they have been banned ;)
or cheat but i dont reccommend that, you may loose friends, and get talked about :D
shagster

Doc, 6400 is not long and judging by the SSS which is under par this would suggest its an easy-ish course. Its the same for everyone when you get your handicap, unless you put cards in during competitions.

3 questions then and i am sure this has been done to death before

1) How often should you shoot your handicap - does it actually say anwhere or are we working to the once about every 5-7 rounds theory

2) if you regulary shoot around the 40 point mark eg 3 out of 5 rounds how many shots should your handicap be reduced by ?
Two examples say 12 and 5 ?

3) how often is it acceptable to shoot around the 40 point or higher mark with being associated with that gentlemen further up the post ?

1) I think I recall someone quoting one in four on here in a previous thread.

2) Assuming the CSS is the same as par, cat1 guy will reduce by 0.4, the cat 2 guy by 0.8 and a cat 3 guy by 1.2 (I think those figures are right?)

3) If you are regularly getting 40 points then your h'cap will adjust itself down until you can no longer shoot 40 points so regularly. :D

I'm sure you don't care right now but isn't it illegal to play matchplay and strokeplay at the same time? Void match, disqualifications and 0.1 up should have been the outcome.

As Parmo points out, 9-under what in the OP? You can only really tell the degree of banditry that may or may not be happening here if you know what SSS & CSS are - par is irrelevant.

Used to work at a very short 9-hole course many years ago around 4,600 yards (for 18 holes!) Par was 66, SSS 60 and it invariably came down to 59 on the day meaning that if you didn't get 40+ points you were probably going up, depending on your handicap category!
