I played a four ball matchplay with some workmates on Wednesday, there was me off 22, a lad off 14 and 2 lads off 28. I was paired with a 28 and so was the lad off 14 and we all agreed to play 3/4 of our handicaps.

It got to the 5th hole and me and my partner were 3up when all of a sudden the lad off 14 declares that we shouldnt be working out holes won/lost on peoples nett scores but on peoples gross scores.

We stood and argued for about 5 mins (good job nobody was behind us) with me saying it is unfair to mark a 14 handicapper against a 28 handicapper in matchplay on gross scores, he however was adamant that it should be definitely gross scores.

In the end i got fed up and told him to stick it up his arse and we just played stableford instead.

Who was right and who was wrong?

How are you going to work out the differential if you dont use nett scores?

Unless you all play off scratch or the same h/c how can this become an issue?

Nett scores is what it's all about. Simple...

Sounds like you didn't work out "how many" shots everyone got off the lowest player before a ball was struck....

I agree with the current system (is that right Dave, you agree with something??) where the strokes come on the lowest S.I.s......never really thought about any other way.....

The way i've been taught to score and have always scored in this situation is to work out 3/4 of everyones handicap and play to nett scores.

So the lad off 14 was playing off 11, i was playing off 17 and the 2 lads off 28 were playing off 21.

Is this what you mean?

The lad off 14 was giving all the shots away.
You (off 22) would have received 6 and the two guys off 28 would have received 11.
So you would have shotted on stroke index holes 6 and below, the two other lads off 11 and below

Everyone should take their shots off the lowest handicapper. Therefore if the lowest was 14, you should have taken 3/4 of the difference between 22 and 14 (which is 6 shots) and the same with the two 28's (11 shots). Play each hole and if you get a shot it is the nett score (i.e 4 nett 3). So for example if the 14 gets a 5 on a par 4 and you get a 5 with a shot you win the hole (5 nett 4).

Yep, thats how i was doing it. Effectively the lowest handicapper plays off scratch.

Sorry, i havent explained myself very well!!

Yep 3/4 or sometimes 7/8 of the diff between all players and the lowest hcp! nett score counts as per stroke index of hole.
